BOSTON - Recalling the pain of the 2001 terrorist attacks and the "countless acts of bravery and kindness" that followed, Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) said Saturday that Americans will tell their children and grandchildren that their love of country "far outshines the darkness of those who hate."
"We learned in the hardest way possible that the American spirit endures. It is that spirit which leads us to defy those who would harm us, and affirm that freedom will win," Kerry said in remarks prepared for a Sept. 11 memorial service attended by victims' families.
"It is that spirit which sustains all of you as you continue to rebuild your lives. And it is that spirit which will guide us all as we rebuild those towers stronger, higher, and more beautiful than ever before. Just like America," he said.
Kerry was speaking to the Massachusetts 9/11 Fund on the third anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that killed 3,000 people. He has addressed families of victims on each of the previous anniversaries. Two of the four planes hijacked to attack buildings in New York City and Washington originated at Boston's Logan Airport.
"For each of you here, time stopped in a way that has made memories of that day three years ago forever fresh, forever painful. I know this because some of you were part of my life before that day, and many of you have become part of it since," he said. "On that day, we all drew strength from each other."
Kerry said the attacks had tested the courage and faith of those who lost loved ones, and he commended them for finding hope, comfort and strength through "the love of those around you and the quiet grace of God." He said all Americans will share the lessons of Sept. 11 with their children and grandchildren.
"We will tell them that on Sept. 11, ordinary men and women became heroes at a moment's notice, and so can you," he said. "We will tell them that we were strong because we took care of each other, and so can you. We will tell them that we came together in tragedy, chose confidence over fear, and that our love for America far outshines the darkness of those who hate."
At 8:46 a.m. the moment three years ago that American Airlines Flight 11 hit the north tower of the World Trade Center Kerry visited a memorial to Massachusetts victims. He laid white lilies at the memorial, located in Boston's Public Garden, then attended a private breakfast with families of the victims before the memorial service.
The anniversary was also the subject of the Democratic Party's weekly radio address, which Kerry recorded for delivery on Saturday. In remarks nearly identical to those he prepared for the commemoration in Boston, the Massachusetts senator honored the good works performed in memory of those who died in the terrorist strikes.
On Friday, Kerry met privately with widows of victims from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut who his aides said are supporting his campaign. The campaign wouldn't say how many widows were at the meeting.
"They looked at me and every single one of them said, 'Our husbands didn't die on Sept. 11 because of what happened with Iraq (news - web sites),'" Kerry told thousands of supporters at the fairgrounds in Allentown, Pa.
"What happened with al-Qaida, with Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) in Afghanistan (news - web sites)?" he asked. "And what George W. Bush has done has tried to scare America, to try and scare Americans and make you believe that one is the other and the other is the same."
You would seek to yield to the UN and our 'allies' at every twist and turn...
How long would our country stand were you to hold the reins of power?
God help us all.
Thomas Jefferson would spit on your "Love", imo.

Huh?
Never believe a story written by someone named Nedra Pickler.
kerry makes me ill. who does he think he is doing a response to President Bush. He is not the president and he shouldn't have been allowed to polliticize 9-11. He always talks about Republicans doing it and then they give him time for "re-buttal"?
It's times like this I wish there wasn't rules about posting
Kerry was against the 9/11 victims before he was for them.
That really made me mad.
A REBUTTAL?
GD him, and I mean that seriously.
The man has no shame and no decency.
How staged is this?
Just like Clinton.
GD him.
now remember all, this is the same zero who was sitting in daschels office with a few others, prior to the planes hitting the towers, scheaming to discredit the new president, once the towers were hit, kerry, in his own words, sat and did NOTHING,yes, NOTHING for 45 minutes. He has been doing NOTHING for 20 years now.
he needs to be exposed as the big John Fraud kerry that he is.
For a second, I thought sKerry was saying "you too can die as a hero in a terrorist attack -- vote for me to make it happen!"
I'm in the middle of reading UNFIT FOR COMMAND and I have to say that not only do I now see just how unfit he is, I realize how dangerous a man like this will be for our Country. He's certifiably insane.
Anyone with half a brain who listens to this cockroach's 1971 "speech" knows tha "love of country" took a distant last place to "love of self".
This clown was delusional then, and continues to be, using every trick (which have worked) that the neocoms have developed in the last 30 years.
Note to those families: We used the same weapons systems that Kerry opposed in Afghanistan, too...
kerry talks in that low, dark voice with no passion. there is not a soul in this man. He goes to church now and tries to use scripture against President Bush. He better be careful not to make God mad!! If he gets elected, please God don't let that happen, I will turn the TV off and the radio anytime he is on.
God he's disgusting. What a miserable human worm!
