MALAYSIA
MAS Grounds Plane Found with Cut Wires
from Associated Press on Thursday, October 07, 2004
Article ID: D154757

Malaysia Airlines grounded an aircraft after maintenance staff found during pre-flight checks that some wires in the cockpit had been severed, the third such case in the past year, police said on Thursday.

The Airbus A330 plane arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport early on Tuesday from Dhaka, Bangladesh, and was scheduled to leave for Bangkok later that day, when the apparent vandalism was discovered two hours before take-off, said Mr Abdul Rahman Hussin, deputy chief of the Criminal Investigation Department.

The plane was grounded and sealed off for investigation, he said.

'We are trying to get evidence but it is difficult. It is not a security breach. The suspect is among the Malaysia Airlines staff,' he told The Associated Press.

Airline engineers were checking flight instruments which indicated a serious malfunction and later discovered the severed wires under the pilot's seat. It was not clear what the consequences would have been had the jetliner taken off with the severed wires.

The national carrier grounded an Airbus A330 bound for Perth, Australia, in October last year after pre-flight tests revealed wires that appeared to have been deliberately cut.

In November, a Boeing 777, scheduled to depart for Bombay, India, was grounded after a damaged cable was found.

Police questioned dozens of Malaysia Airlines employees in both cases, but were unable to find the culprits.
