The president-elect never took office and never confirmed a cabinet. The presidency passes through the line of succession to the cabinet officers of the departing administration, assuming they have not resigned by January 20th, as is standard procedure, and assuming that they were not at the White House bidding farewell to the outgoing president. Perhaps the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, or another lesserknown cabinet member, was not in the area; then he or she would become president. Or maybe no one in the line of succession is alive, and a number of generals, undersecretaries, and governors claim that they are in charge. (snipped)"
That would never happen. I believe three months ago, Congress passed the "Doomsday plan".
The line of succession is always kept since 9/11. There is always a rotation of who is staying away and is safely at Mt Weather during major political events like the Conventions and other major gatherings.
On Inauguration Day, the Speaker of the House, the Secretary of State, Agriculture, Finance and Transportation as well as a group of senators would likely not be in attendance. They are the line of succession according to the "Doomsday" plan recently inacted by Congress.
If something were to happen, these people are already gathered at Mt Weather and Congress would have a small, but still quorum to vote on anything that needed to be passed immediatly and the next in line to succession would automatically take over.
I'm halfway through today's posts...there seem to be so many incidents today. It surely seems to me that AQ has issued the "go-code". Lesser operatives engaging in sabotage of various kinds, culminating in their anticipated mega-attack.
Hmmm--and if Hilary would know this so far in advance...(just speculating)...who could have tipped her off?

If a President shall not have been chosen before the time fixed for the beginning of his term, or if the President elect shall have failed to qualify, then the Vice President elect shall act as President until a President shall have qualified; and the Congress may by law provide for the case wherein neither a President elect nor a Vice President elect shall have qualified, declaring who shall then act as President, or the manner in which one who is to act shall be selected, and such person shall act accordingly until a President or Vice President shall have qualified.
So in reality, if the President Elect or VP Elect died and were not sworn in yet, the Electoral College would appoint someone qualified to be president in their place.
In my current paranoid frame of mind, I suspect we are going to be seeing a flurry of activity among our enemies; whom I imagine are awaiting the AQ attacks.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese Communist Party chief and President Hu Jintao has urged the People's Liberation Army (PLA) to prepare for a military struggle, but stopped short of singling out rival Taiwan as the target.
Many security analysts see the Taiwan Strait as the most dangerous flashpoint in Asia. China claims sovereignty over Taiwan and has threatened to attack if the democratic island of 23 million people declares independence.
Hu, who assumed the role of military chief less than two weeks ago, told the 2.5-million-strong PLA to "seize the moment and do a good job of preparing for a military struggle," the People's Daily and the Liberation Army Daily said on Thursday.
Hu did not say against whom the struggle might be fought.
But on Wednesday, a spokesman for China's policymaking Taiwan Affairs Office accused Taiwan Premier Yu Shyi-kun of clamoring for war with threats to fire missiles at Shanghai if the PLA attacked the self-ruled island.
Taiwan needed a counter-strike capability, Yu said in defense of plans to buy T$610.8 billion (US$18.2 billion) worth of weapons from the United States.
He made the remarks hours before thousands of people took to the streets of Taipei on Saturday to demand the government scrap the weapons package they said would trigger an arms race with China and squeeze social welfare and state spending on education.
Tension between China and Taiwan has been simmering since the re-election in March of the island's President Chen Shui-bian, who Beijing is convinced will push for statehood during his second four-year term.
Beijing and Taipei have been rivals since their split at the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949, but trade, investment and tourism have blossomed since detente in the late 1980s.
Hu also urged the PLA, the world's biggest army, to "comprehensively revolutionize, modernize and standardize," newspapers said. No details were given.
Hu, 61, replaced Jiang Zemin, 78, as chairman of the Central Military Commission on Sept. 19, completing the most orderly leadership succession in the 55 years since the Communist Party took power.
The following day he promoted two senior officers in a move that was likely to help consolidate his position in the PLA.

U.S. Deploys Destroyers in East Sea to Watch North Korea

Fenghuangweishi, a satellite TV channel in Hong Kong, reported on September 30 that the U.S. would be deploying the latest destroyers for patrol duty in the East Sea.
The channel reported that the deployment is the first step in the Bush administration’s Missile Defense System plan.
Rear Admiral Jonathan Greenert of the U.S. Seventh Fleet implied that North Korea is the main subject of the inspection, saying, “It’s difficult to say who is our enemy. However, we are keeping a strict watch over ‘rogue states.’”
The news reported that the deployment of destroyers in the East Sea seems to have something to do with the indications that a test firing of a North Korean long-range missile may be imminent.

Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has urged his country's weapons developers to step up work on making a nuclear bomb, a U.S. official said.
According to the official, an authoritative source in the Iranian exile community has stated that Khamenei met recently with senior government and military leaders on the nuclear weapons program.
Khamenei told the gathering, "We must have two bombs ready to go in January or you are not Muslims," the official said.
Jafari-Jalali, a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Majles, stated in an Iranian press interview last week that the recent International Atomic Energy Agency resolution calling on Iran to halt uranium enrichment could lead to Tehran withdrawing from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.
Iran's military announced earlier this month that it would test-fire a "strategic" missile during the Ashura 5 military exercises of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.
Brig. Gen. Hossein Salami announced the missile test on Sept. 18. "The climax of this stage of the exercises is the actual missile operations and the testing of a series of missiles with different ranges," he said.
Iranian Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani said earlier this month that, "given that an effective deterrent policy does not halt at a certain point, the Islamic Republic of Iran continues upgrading its defensive capability." Shamkhani said Iran has acquired an effective deterrent power to confront its enemies in the region.
Iran test-fired a Shihab-3 on Sept. 18 and had also tested one in August.
Meanwhile, British intelligence, working with Iraqi security, has uncovered a cell within the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps that is working to destabilize Iraq.
The Iranians had paid insurgents to conduct attacks in southern Iraq.
"I don't think there's any doubt that the Iranians are involved and are providing support" to the Iraqi insurgents, Secretary of State Colin Powell said last week.
