A half hour ago, Dan Rather went on CNN and said that he knows the Jerry Killian documents to be authentic, and knows that they are not forgeries. Therefore, he said, there will be no retraction, no correction, and -- apparently -- no investigation. The text of the interview is not yet available on CNN's site, but we'll link to it when it becomes available.
What does this mean? Last night, it was reported that senior executives at CBS News were promising an investigation. Today, Dan Rather is personally vouching for the documents' authenticity. This can only mean that Rather himself is the source of the documents. This makes sense; if a staffer on the 60 Minutes payroll had come up with the purported records, the story never would have run without the documents being authenticated. Who has the power to drive this story on to the air without an investigation that would include, for example, contacting Killian's widow, or his son? Dan Rather does.
This would appear to signal the end of Rather's career. If the documents are ultimately accepted as forgeries, which seems inevitable to us, he can't survive. My guess: Rather knows that he will be retiring soon in any event, so as his last public contribution, he is doing whatever he can to elect John Kerry.
An informant, meanwhile, has a theory about how Rather got the forged documents: keep an eye on Ben Barnes.
Watch out for him showing up in a raincoat to do the evening news!
What's the frequency, Kenneth?
Well, if he did, then he got snookered! Washington only bought American! He rode to the inauguration in a Lincoln Town Car.
A tsunami is being created deep in the bowels of CBS. The first gentle wisp of the wave will start in the sales dept. when the ad salesmen get their first gentle rebuffs on future sales. The rebuff will be a let us see what happens attitude. This will make it up to the dept. heads, and finally up to the board rooms. By now the tsunami will be unstoppable and full measures will be taken to reduce all damage. Dan Rather will be the first victim.
One of the memos, allegedly written in 1973, refers to receiving pressure form another officer who had retired the previous year.
Isn't that the truth??!! Klintoon and Hitlery are running around free and the toadies who did their dirty work are either in jail or dead!!!
Except he's not a victim, he caused this.
According to my sister who was in the Army and served as the secretary to one of the top officers at Fort Hood in the mid 1970's, the typist's initials were required to be on everything they typed. She believes the same would have been true for the National Guard. I looked at some copies of the memos online and didn't see any initials for a typist. Have the memos been checked for this?
If the typist initials were on the memos then he or she could be identified from the TANG records. If there are no typist initials on the memos then checking on whether this policy was followed by the TANG in the early 1970's could indicate whether or not the documents could have originated from the TANG office.
Dan Rather owns a vacation home in Austin.
His activist daughter Robin lives there, too.
If they ask him about phone calls, he'll just say it was a daddy talking to his daughter.
All paths lead to Austin, Texas.
Boy, if the perp was Dan's daughter ... it would be too GOOD!
What's the frequency, Kenneth?
What's the SUPERSCRIPT, Kenneth?
If Robin Rather was the forger or at least the conduit between the forged government documents and her daddy, she would go to jail.
Yeah that's right. Thanks. I just remembered the wrong story and source. I linked to the correct one on another post.
Given that respected document specialists have indicated possible forgery, it is only reasonable for Rather to produce proof here,ie, source and expert. If he's not willing to do that then he should apologize for the story and resign.
I saw her picture on another thread...looks like see landed right next to the roots of her Dad's tree!
"Except he's not a victim..."
Maybe somebody at CBS set him up. I wonder if he has any enemies there. LOL
