Dear Friends,
Today I met with Mexico's Sonora Governor Eduardo Bours to discuss how we can increase the viability of the Port of Guaymas. Less than 250 miles from our international border, Guaymas is a natural trade outlet for both Arizona and Mexico. Its expansion can benefit both of our countries by providing increased commerce opportunities through Sonora and Arizona.
A deep-water port in Guaymas can improve the supply chain into Arizona and promote opportunities for our business owners. It can also provide a critical seaport connection for Arizona trade and help boost a stronger regional economy with Sonora. Improving the regional and individual economies of Arizona-Sonora will benefit the quality of life for all of us, creating better jobs for people on both sides of the border. Both international relations and import/export access can be strengthened in this collaborative effort.
Since our first meeting in September of last year, Governor Bours and I have aggressively pushed for this port. Together we can create economic growth and vision for both of our countries, improving the quality of life for Arizonans and our neighbors to the south.
As always, if you have any questions or comments, please contact my office at 602-542-1318. Your input is important.
Yours very truly,
Janet Napolitano
Governor

I would be very concerned about the Homeland Security aspects of this. I would imagine most of the ships would be from the PRC.
Interesting comment from a Democrat governor consdiering that the only reason I can see for using the Port of Guayamas is avoiding the $100 and hour union labor at the Port of Los Angeles. LA and Guayamas are about the same distance from PHX.
