The Hoaxing of CBS (FR Mentioned)
The Weekly Standard ^ | September 10,004 | Richard Starr

Posted on 09/10/2004 9:51:03 AM PDT by buzzyboop

A NUMBER OF EXPERTS have now weighed in on the inauthenticity of the documents CBS breathlessly revealed on 60 Minutes earlier this week--documents purportedly typed by the deceased commander of George W. Bush's Texas Air National Guard unit in 1972 and 1973, but actually produced on a personal computer using Microsoft Word. I predict--and here I'm going out on a limb 10-feet wide and only an inch off the ground--that it's only a matter of time before CBS admits it was deceived. If there's any honor and professional pride left in the CBS newsroom, they will then expose the party or parties who deceived them.

Apparently the documents were vetted based on content alone, not appearance. The content matches "what was being said back then," so the documents must be good.

CBS, officially mum on its sources, seems to have two people vouching for "what was being said back then" according to scuttlebutt. Other threads (don't have them right in front of me) show that retired ANG officer Hodges, supposedly a Republican, has the same name as a Kerry donor. Prof. Strong seems to work for a Soros foundation.

That's true...ABC did a hit piece on Food Lion, some 10 or 12 years ago. Disgruntled FL employee set it up for them, IIRC.

ABC News Radio just said that Dan Rather said today that he stands by the documents.

BIG MISTAKE DAN. IT'S NOT JUST TYPE FONT PROBLEM!

The Date of Bush's flight physical is off. William Campenni came forward today and brought up the point that it would have been in July...not May.

Then there is the issue of Stoudt's retirement date.

Then there is the issue of a DNC Staffer telling the Washington Prowler that the DNC had the documents originated from the DNC

More than six weeks ago, an opposition research staffer for the Democratic National Committee received documents purportedly written by President George W. Bush's Texas Air National Guard squadron commander, the late Col. Jerry Killian.

The oppo researcher claimed the source was "a retired military officer." According to a DNC staffer, the documents were seen by both senior staff members at the DNC, as well as the Kerry campaign.

"More than a couple people heard about the papers," says the DNC staffer. "I've heard that they ended up with the Kerry campaign, for them to decide to how to proceed, and presumably they were handed over to 60 Minutes, which used them the other night. But I know this much. When there was discussion here, there were doubts raised about their authenticity."

CBS says it used a document expert and a handwriting analyst. At least the handwriting analyst had to work on the document itself, not its content.

I predict that they will do neither, and instead will follow their present course of insisting that we take the documents as valid on their face at CBS and Dan Rather's say-so.

That may not work for them anymore. Red Dan's compadres in the MSM are starting to turn on him and are demanding explanations. They're afraid that their "credibility" will be damaged if they stand with him.

They're panicking, pure and simple. McAwful and Red Dan are out there telling conflicting tales, and they're floating the "Karl Rove did it!" trial balloon to see if it will work. I don't think it will.

"If there's any honor and professional pride left in the CBS newsroom, they will then expose the party or parties who deceived them."

Since the CBS heirarchy sets & supports the anti-Bush agenda, there's no pressure from the top to come clean. Pressure on sponsors & affiliates is VERY effective. If they tell you they have no control over the network, tell them you DO have control over your TV and you're deleting the CBS station from your remote...no more local news, no more ads...they are known by the company they keep. Enough of these calls and the sponsors and affiliates WILL get the message to CBS.

I'm sure see-BS will blame it on their hatred for Bush that made them blind and incompetent.

Good point...though it doesn't explain CBS's being blind and incompetent over the past decades.     ; )

...it's only a matter of time before CBS admits it was deceived.

Now come on, you know this whole thing was concocted on a steamy hot August afternoon at Rather's Texas ranch by Rather and his cronies, MCawful and Co.

The liberal main stream media is afraid of FR. And they should be.

Indeed they should. I'm continuously impressed by the knowledge and credentials of many of our posters. Many have multiple university degrees or other professional and academic achievements. One of us always seems to be aware of something going on and is not shy about sharing it with the rest. Buckhead's description of the anomolies in the typeface used in the memos and ability to nail the several fonts that might have been used coupled with lightning fast posting of this analysis - that performance is in the finest traditions of Free Republic.

Right you are, but the interesting question is how lying, sociopathic slime like the Clintons will try to undermine the War and American Victory while preparing to come in and claim that only they know how to win the War.

I almost have to believe that this was their "Bush DUI" story for 2004, the last-second dirt bomb to be released the Friday before the election that would tip the election to Kerry. Unless they're even stupider than I give them credit for (and I give them a LOT of credit for stupidity), they had to know that these "memos" wouldn't stand up under serious scrutiny, but that it didn't matter because by the time the fact that they were forgeries came to light, Kerry would be safely elected and all this would be past history to be chuckled over, sort of like the revelations of massive voter fraud in the 1960 Kennedy-Nixon race.

We've heard all kinds of stories about how the Kerry campaign is so massively overmanned and overly bureaucratized, about how the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing, and so forth. I'll just bet that this will turn out to be a case of some campaign flunky watching the President's post-convention bounce, coupled with Kerry's sinking ship, and then just panicking and dropping the Big One without getting the go-ahead from the senior staff, in a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding.
