Blogs v. 60 Minutes
Tech Central Station ^ | 09/10/04 | Jay Currie

Posted on 09/10/2004 8:18:20 AM PDT by TonyInOhio

This is an excerpt that captures the point:

One day. That was all it took for the ranks of citizen journalists to swarm and then thoroughly discredit a story which ran in the New York Times, the Boston Globe and on a network news magazine.

From the Kerry perspective a scandal involving forged documents is a disaster. Kerry had yesterday to get in front of the story and he missed that boat. Instead of being able to stay on message and trying to beat down the post convention pulse which has sent Bush several points ahead in various opinion polls, Kerry is likely to face questions about who was responsible for the forgeries. While it would be astonishing if anyone inside the Kerry organization had a hand in them, it is a question that will be asked. Moreover, the spectacle of Kerry announcing that his campaign organization and the Democratic Party had nothing to do with issuing those documents will occupy several critical news cycles and focus attention on character -- exactly where Kerry does not want to be.

From the perspective of the establishment media, this, too, is a disaster. CBS will have to explain: where did the documents come from? What were the bona fides of the source? Who was the source? Which expert looked at the documents? How closely?

Those are the starter questions. The more basic question is how could a rabble of bloggers, in one day, provide hard core proof of forgery when major news organizations took those documents at face value? Most fundamental of all, why did the New York Times, the Boston Globe and CBS allow themselves to be used for such a transparent attempt to slander President Bush? Out in the blogosphere there are a swarm of people rooting for the answers.

Gee, I don't understand how this could happen.,,?? How could journalists let "dedicated" amateurs stump them and kick their a#@.

Think back freepers... way back to college and who were the guys and gals that were "majoring" in journalism.

Basically they were right behind PE majors (they were wussies or wimps) or were "smart" jocks looking for the easy "A"... in general.

In the food chain they look up to public school teachers but are about even with "women's studies" or "(enter-race)" studies. All which stand on the heads of gay/lesbian studies....LMAO.

They're to stupid to "produce" anything, to lazy to work but generally like to sit around, drink beer, talk about "issues" and back them up with snippets of facts that are shaded to support their "stories".

Finally when they graduate they delude themselves into "wanting to help people"... when all they want to do is move from local rag newspaper, to larger circulation newspaper, to regional magazine, to national magazine to television...(local) then regional cable finally to the big three.... By that time their nose is so brown and lips so swollen from firm application to the hind quarters of the other "journalist" ahead of them that it begins to look like a giant centipede crawling up Mt. Everest... with the top 3 "anchors" sitting on the summit.... and thousands of little beads coming out of their rear end.... (nice mental picture).

Since the "libs" dominate the networks they will never risk the money, fame or "awards for journalism" that are annually bestowed on the most creative a#@-kissers. It's just like the plagarist in the ny times, and washington posts... they are so stupid they can't even do their own Nexux search.

Free Republic rules!!!!

I hate to rain on the parade, but I'm guessing MSM will avoid asking very many questions,

They may have no choice. There may be a criminal investigation of this incident. It is a felony to forge government documents or to even be in possession of forged government documents. I don't think the courts will give first amendment protection to journalists to protect anonymous sources of forged documents.

I just heard McAwful going on about how the forgeries didn't matter and the real issue is that the President lied! We're going to have to get these boys up on criminal charges I guess.

I know it's too much to ask what GWB "lied" about if the evidence of it is fake (not to mention even the fake documents weren't incriminating--just spinnable).

I say book 'em.

Rather should be thoroughly humiliated and humbled

Yes he should, but he isn't. He's out there now saying he stands by the forged documents. What a hoot.

It is not a rabble of bloggers they are memebers of a democracy, more democratic then ever democracy was concieved. Whose only tool for establishing their creditability is proof of truth. Stripped from the online community is hierarchy, appearances, institutional educational background, and even cumulative wealth. All that is left to make one's self interesting and readable is the offering of information given in an interesting format, and with proof that it is correct. There is no room for even charisma here, just the facts stated clearly and precisely.

The Democratic heirarchy has never been able to wrap their minds around this. Hence even Jamie Gorlick was quoted as saying; "I'm enormously impressed," said 9-11 Commisioner Jamie Gorelick, "that lay people with no powers of subpoena, with no access to insider information of any sort, could put together a very powerful set of questions and set of facts that are a road map for this commission. It is really quite striking. Now, what's your secret?"

You said it and it deserves repeating...

Dan Rather should resign or be fired !!

CBS news should fire Dan Rather for not being absolutely positively certain of the authenticity of these forged documents. We are in the absolute final leg of a Presidential election and Dan Rather rushed to press to get these dociuments on the air because he thought it would potentially help Kerry and hurt Bush. He is blinded by his partisanship and is not fit to be a journalist.

Dan Rather never even looked into where these papers came from. It was his job to be CERTAIN of their authenticity. It's fitting that Rather's career comes to an end under this cloud of his extremist partisanship. He will always be remembered for this. His legacy will be fitting....a reporter who would lie to America if it supported his Left Wing Ideology.

How could a rabble army defeat the most powerful land army on earth? Ask George Washington. I just love revolution, and we are right in the middle of one!

So it is merely the changing of one letter in his middle name, and John Forbes Kerry becomes John "Forges" Kerry. Just a typo.
