Guard records stir Democrats

Kerry backers focus on revelations about Bush military service, saying 'character counts' in a president

BY KEN FIREMAN WASHINGTON BUREAU; Staff writer Craig Gordon contributed to this story.

September 10, 2004

WASHINGTON - Democrats yesterday seized upon new documents about President George W. Bush's Vietnam-era National Guard service to accuse Bush of shirking his duty and then deceiving the public about it.

At a news conference, Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) said the material proved Bush received preferential treatment to get into the Guard and got it again when he failed to fulfill his service obligations.

Harkin defended the party's decision to make an issue of 30-year-old events, saying Bush himself had made it relevant to this year's campaign by repeatedly lying, as recently as earlier this year, when asked whether he had fulfilled his Guard duties.

"Character counts, especially in a president," Harkin said. "We want a president who will be honest and truthful with the American people. If the president will lie about this, will he lie about how we got into Iraq, for example?"

Character counts, eh..?
And what will the Democrats be saying once it is exposed that these forgeries were shopped by the Kerry campaign?

As usual, Newsday is at least one day behind the story. You would think by now they would have caught on to the fact the records they reference in their article are forgeries.

I really think the old media is going to end up shattered, like the old Soviet Union. It seemed so powerful, and we were so afraid of it. But it was built on a fiction of lies, and just dissolved one day.

Harkin's a fine one to accuse someone of lying about Vietnam era sevice...

Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa first lost face in 1984, during a closely contested bid for the Senate seat he now holds. Harkin was, at the time, a 10-year incumbent in Congress. He claimed to be a former Navy combat pilot who flew F-4 and F-8 jets on missions over Vietnam.

During the 1984 Senate contest, another senator, Barry Goldwater (then a major general in the Air Force Reserve), knew the truth and decided enough was enough. He publicly denounced Harkin as a fake.

Harkin's people at first responded with a hilarious explanation that their man had actually been in combat in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, from 1965 to 1966, when he flew the F-4 and F-8 missions.

But Harkin finally came out and said that he had never been a Vietnam combat pilot, contradicting his own numerous published claims.

The issue seemed settled once and for all when he set the record straight; he was in fact a ferry pilot, transporting crippled aircraft out of Saigon to repair facilities in Japan.

Aw, God. Forget about these documents. I've just gotten wind that the 'rats have gotten their hands on something *big*, something damaging.

The Democrats have CD's containing Bush's Paypal records from the Texas National Guard in 1971. These records show that Bush was not only paying for access to pornographic websites, but buying prescription medication from overseas pharmacies online...

Ugh...

Every campaign does it.
It's a private matter between media outlets.
You don't understand. It's the seriousness of the charges raised.
You shoes are untied.
Look over there! Is that Joe Dimaggio?

Yes, first the Soviets, then the leftist press, and then the Democratic party itself.

Two down, one to go.

"Character counts," ha ha, that is so funny coming from people who mightily defended the morally bankrupt, draft-dodging Clinton.

And when's an article going to come out questioning the democrats about the forgery revelation? I thought I was in for a real fun time when I clicked on this, only to see that they're talking pre-memogate.

Harkin is a buffoon. He debauches the airwaves every time his lips part. I saw him on television today running his perverted pothole about the President's National Guard service.

It must really suck to be a Democrat about now...

Imagine the pain and disappointment...

And the simply truth is, they're sorry they got caught, not that the documents are lies.

They do have something working in their favor though. September 11th is tomorrow. That fact alone will likely blow this story out of the headlines in the MSM for some time to come.

Well, if I remember Pay Pal was hacked into several months ago and they had to do a lot damage control with their customer base in that information was stolen from their site. They never identified what it was, most customers were concerned it was credit card information.

In any case, I didn't even think PayPal was in business in the early 1970's a group I believe called Dearborn Partners currently owns the company. If there is any validity to this someone at Pay Pal would know about the hacking and what identity theft was taken, as well as if the company was in Business in 1970. Most of these types of "wallet Internet" firms didn't come into existence until the 1980's. I think that one of the first was Comp U Serve.

I am going to do a little researching. Does any computer Geek out there or computer trivia buff know when Pay Pal, AOL Wallet, Yahoo Wallet, started on the Internet?

Just did some checking and Pay Pal was founded in 1998. I guess it would be hard to have used their system in 1970......Kerry's new campaign staff must be in such a tizzy they are starting to inhale!

The DUmmies are just beginning to go into Meltdown Mode over the revelation that the documents are forgeries. Here are some DUmmie commentaries:

If this is a forgery, I'm sure it's another in a long line of Karl Rove's stunts. But it's not a forgery. Come on, CBS vetted it with experts, of which there must be many. On the other hand, the detractors are all right-wing bloggers. (Who you know will attack anything that knocks bush.)

My only question Is how thoroughly did CBS review these documents? How many experts did they show these documents to before going on with the story? What were their background and area of expertise?

CBS is a creditable news source. They didn't get that way by being stupid. These docs were probably gone over with a fine tooth comb until they were sure it didn't have any nits.

what document? it doesn't matter. the guy's a deserter who kills for fun he is doomed to failure I don't care if they say it was hand-typed by Rove and given to Rather by Andrew Card dressed as Huggy Bear.

So Rove gave them to CBS? Is CBS that gullible?

There are real docs that the Whitehouse had and they created forgery forms of these docs and passed them off to discredit the real ones if they ever surfaced. It mucks it up enough that if real versions surfaced, noone would ever believe it - the "forgery" meme is planted.

I agree - its a fraud Walt has showed two other era documents "as proof" that have the superscripted "th" and none of them even closely resemble the document 60 mins had - they fell for it hook line and sinker. They look completely different in the way it was done. If I knew how to PSP them side by side I would but I am looking at them now and this 60 mins thing was a fraud and Rove is ROFL at them.

Oh, please. Like a bunch of amateurs on the Internet would be able to figure out something that CBS News stuck its neck out over and never thought to investigate. Riiight.

Yikes. I started out thinking this was a Rove plant, after reading http://www.warblogging.com / - then I was convinced it wasn't. I've been crazy all day about this thing. Now I'm back where I started. I need to be sedated.

What's with all you paranoid people? Get a grip!!! This is exactly what goo defence attorneys do...CREATE DOUBT!!!! There's absolutely no reason to think these doxs are forgeries! NONE!!!

Document is forgery -- this can become the basis of an allegation that the whitehouse continues to deceive the public by lying to us, sometimes in very clever ways.

CBS has to have something to substantiate the authenticity of the memos. If it doesn't, it has cost itself any credibility it had. Obviously, this wouldn't be good for a it's news division. CBS' story had to be thoroughly vetted!

Oh good GOD! Stop and think for a moment...IF it were discovered that they were a forgery then the media would HOT after the story of who did it and why. The blowback from that would be bigger than the actual story.

What crap. The issue is are they believable? Hell yes. And what the f*ck does a wife or son for that matter really know about husband/dad. Well sh*t, let's ask Hillary. What's really Rovian is to suggest the documents are fake. Chimp has been an underachiever his whole goddamn life, much to our pain, so why would they NOT be authentic?

ROFL. This from the party that told us character didn't matter when Bubba was President. Oh and if that's ancient history, how come their candidate doesn't have the guts to face the media and answer ALL the Swifties' questions AND execute a SF 180? John F*ckin' can't even be truthful about his own political ideology and the Democrats have the chutzpah to talk about the importance of character? Yeah, nice try coming from a party that aids and abets forgeries of historical documents in a desperate bid to win the White House. These people have no shame.

Bush ripped me off in an Ebay scam in 1971! Tried to sell me a cheap Chinese knockoff Pentium 4 processor he was passing off as authentic! Where's CBS?
