Are the Killian Memos a Forgery?
The media is buzzing with the possibility that the Killian memos broadcast on 60 Minutes are forgeries. The truth hangs on whether any commonly-used typewriters in the 60's-70's had proportional spacing. If you HAVE a typewriter like that, please type out a replica of Killian's first memo and see if your typewriter matches his.

Perhaps some freepers with typewriters can have some fun with this and send them some "replications" of the forgeries! Yup. DUmmy some up in Word, twiddle them a bit in Photoshop, fax 'em to age them, give the DNC email address as the source.

How do they plan to handle that some of the memos were made after the person who supposedly wrote them retired? It's different from, and much worse than that. The guy who allegedly wrote them wasn't retired, but he mentions being pressured by someone else who retired the year before the memo is dated.

Thing is, no one in CBS even thought about raising a red flag about those docs. Actually they did, but Rather overruled them.

"There is a school of thought here that the Kerry people dumped this in our laps, figuring we'd do the heavy lifting on the story. That maybe they had doubts about these documents but hoped we'd get more information," says the producer. "If that's the case, then we're bigger fools than we already appear to be judging by all the chatter about how these documents could be forgeries."

Next we're going to hear, yes the documents were fake but the content is factual.

Is there a consensus yet on whether the th is definitively anachronistic? That Miscellaneous page seems to have been produced by completely different equipment. The "th" isn't the real smoking gun, and that one's a different format anyway. No, the real smoking gun, for those who've worked with type, is the spacing and line heights exactly matching Word default settings (there was a question about Word's "th", but that has been explained as a difference between the screen display and printed output).

What's scary, when you think about it, is that Kerry/CBS may have gotten away with this if they simply pulled out an old typewriter, and added a few typos and whiteout ink...I thought about that. We save several IBM Selectric III's still in our office for completing downloaded forms. Even though they were not in use in the earliy 70's, I bet the differences would have been much less noticeable.
I am remembering what a pain in the butt centering text was. As another thread pointed out, the letterhead is perfectly centered. Is that even possible on a typewriter. Would a commander sit there and count characters, divide by two and backspace from the centerpoint of the page for a CYA memo? I don't think so.

Hey, let 'em try. I'm really not too concerned. Sometimes the truth is very empowering - and calming...
True!
But their mindset is different, they have never been, never are, and never will be concerned about the TRUTH!! Truth is not in their vocabulary!!!

the whole thing, especially CBS vetting is so amatuerish that CBS should be ashamed... CBS Ashamed? Surely, you jest. As an arm of the DNC, they will say "oops, you caught us" and, with a mumbled apology, merely move on to the next Big Story.
Do not expect any heads to roll other than some Executive Clerk or Senior Water Boy. Remember, it was Bush's fault...
