BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The United States and Europe are drifting further apart on security issues and the use of force in the aftermath of the Iraq (news - web sites) war, a major transatlantic opinion survey released on Thursday showed.

The Transatlantic Trends 2004 opinion poll of 11,000 Americans and Europeans, conducted in June and issued two months before a crucial U.S. presidential election, suggested a fundamental change in transatlantic relations may be under way.

A growing majority of Europeans seek a more independent role from the United States and three-quarters say they disapprove of President Bush (news - web sites)'s international policies, the survey found.

Some 58 percent of Europeans said strong U.S. leadership in the world was undesirable, an increase of nine percentage points from a similar poll last year. Only in Britain and the Netherlands do a majority desire strong U.S. leadership.

By contrast, 79 percent of Americans say they support strong European Union (news - web sites) leadership in world affairs and look to Europe as their preferred partner for solving global problems, even though 51 percent of them approve of Bush's foreign policy.

"yawn"

They will love us again when they need help, as is their history. Too bad there's such a short memory span over there as to the benefits of exercising military strength. I guess saving them from Nazism and Communism simply weren't examples that they view as tangible enough.

" Asked whether war is necessary in some situations to obtain justice, more than 80 percent of Americans -- but only 40 percent of Europeans -- supported the proposition."

Typical worthless socialist anti-semites in Europe. Going by their logic, the allies wasted millions of lives fighting the Nazis when they could have broght justice to Hitler without war. I'm sure if asked politely to step down and face justice, Hitler would have agreed, lol.

And yet they also want to continue funding their welfare states at the expense of their armed forces, while relying on the awful United States to act as their surrogate army. Seems as though they'll have to make a choice sooner or later about what they really want and what they're willing to do to get it.

I don't think Germany will roll over, you'll see some nationalist elected there as the Islamic tipping point is reached.

The Eu needs to be smashed, broken up.

I'm not kidding.

They just told Turkey to repeal their adultry laws. Think about that for a minute.

"We'll end up having to save them from Islamism...but, I won't be around for that one"

I have my doubts that they will ask, as France appears to have simply rolled over (surrendered) to it within their own borders. The headscarf ban may escalate to civil war status eventually but I'm sure they will surrender to that as well, as surrendering is a French specialty, alongside quiche and needlessly-overpriced wine.

Other European nations may similarly allow a slow takeover by the Islamists, as France appears eager to allow. It might be a concern if the Islamists get impatient and start with the bombings in an effort to speed things up, but otherwise Europe seems very accommodating.

Enjoy a visit to the Sistine Chapel while you still can.....

"I don't think Germany will roll over, you'll see some nationalist elected there as the Islamic tipping point is reached" I hope that you're right. As revolting as their current Socialist/Green political tendencies are, I would truly miss losing an opportunity of an occasional schnitzel and schweinsax'hn.

Good. Let the Europeans build their own army, and stop calling us everytime they get in trouble.

They need us more than we need them

Excellent. Pull our troops out of Europe, shut down the UN Building in New York and move it to Paris. Then make the Urines pay for it all.

I am not surprised. I was in Europe last week and got a look at the European version of CNN. It has even more anti-Bush bias than the US version.
