Darfur killings 'are genocide'

The atrocities in the Darfur region of western Sudan amount to "genocide", America declared yesterday.

The announcement by Colin Powell, the US secretary of state, sharply raised the pressure on Khartoum to restore security and rein in the Janjaweed militia.

Colin Powell talks to the Senate foreign relations committee

Mr Powell told a meeting of the Senate foreign relations committee: "I concluded that genocide has been committed in Darfur and that the government of Sudan and the Janjaweed bear responsibility and that genocide may still be occurring."

He said the finding did not oblige America to take any specific action. The announcement came as the United Nations is debating a US-drafted resolution threatening sanctions on Sudan's oil industry.

"This is a unique, strong statement," said Jemera Rone, the Sudan researcher for Human Rights Watch, a New York-based lobby group. "It raises the ante quite a bit."

Sudan's foreign minister, Ahmed Hassan al-Zubeir, denounced the US move. He said the crisis was a "an internal tribal problem" and not genocide.

About 50,000 people are believed to have been killed in Darfur and about 1.2 million people have been driven out of their homes in the past 18 months.

Sorry guys, but right now we're mainly concerned about these crazy assed muslim fanatics. Once we've got them under control (appx 10 years) then we'll concern ourselves with the latest atrocities in Africa....maybe.

Wait a minute. The Islamic Republic of the Sudan is a major state sponsor of terrorism. According to the Bush doctrine, we must depose the Islamic Republic because it supports, harbors, and finances terrorists. Sudan also kills millions of its own people. Ten percent of neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo are Muslim according to the CIA. That's also one of the world's worst genocide.

Yeah, we're stretched thin. But Sudan could be too big a terror problem to ignore, especially now that we have an obvious pretense to invade.
