Stenholm attends first meeting as Armed Services Committee member By CORY CHANDLER AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

U.S. Rep. Charlie Stenholm, D-Abilene, attended his first House Armed Services Committee hearing Wednesday morning.

Stenholm, currently representing District 17 but vying for the District 19 seat, was appointed to the committee Tuesday night.

"Charlie Stenholm is one of our most able members of Congress," said Missouri Democrat and ranking committee member Ike Skelton through a written release. "He understands national security thoroughly, and I predict he will be a tremendous asset to the House Armed Services Committee."

Stenholm said the appointment will provide him with a greater opportunity to represent the interests of Dyess Air Force Base, near Abilene, as the area prepares for possible realignment.

Committee chair Duncan Hunter, R-California, visited Abilene in August to discuss the future of the base. The visit was organized by the congressional office of District 19 U.S. Rep. Randy Neugebauer, who is currently facing off with Stenholm for the seat.

Stenholm said he intends to approach his work on the committee with the "same bipartisan and independent style of leadership" that he displays as ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee.

"I look forward to working with Republican and Democratic members to continue providing for a strong national defense and support of our active duty personnel."

He said he expects the next round of base closure recommendations and President Bush's proposal to strengthen U.S. intelligence-gathering capabilities to aid the war on terrorism to be key issues he will face.

Stenholm's office sought to assure constituents the appointment will not affect Stenholm's seniority or membership on the Agriculture Committee.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California provided Stenholm's Armed Services Committee nomination, which was approved by the Policy and Steering Committee.

Here is a good example of how the Democrats are trying to help Stenholm keep his House seat on Nov. 2: giving him a high-profile committee assignment right before the election. So Stenholm gets an Armed Services seat from the anti-military Nancy Pelosi, D-CA. Will the voters of Abilene endorse this? Probably

Stenholm of Stamford (Taylor Co.) is the Democrat seeking reelection in a reconfigured House district stretching from Lubbock to Abilene. His opponent is the Republican incumbent Randy Neugebauer of Lubbock.

Have you seen any recent polls for the Stenholm/Neugebauer race?

Irrespective of his new committee assignment (in which he is not only in the minority, but is last in seniority!), Stenholm will still lose, and it won't even be close. Stenholm only got 52% in 2002 running against a nobody with no money in a district in which he had represented 89% of its residents for at least a decade. This time, Stenholm is facing a well-financed incumbent Republican Congressman in a district in which he had previously represented only 31% of the population, and the district is even more Republican than his old district (which was one of the most Republican districts in the nation to have a RAT Congressman). I would be surprised if Stenholm got over 45% in November.

I agree. Neugebauer is a great campaigner, and Charlie just looks and acts old and worn out.

RE:"Hot check Charlie..." Where does that come from? The House bank scandal 11 years ago or something else, local?

There is a group called "Republicans for Stenholm" active in Abilene. The newly realigned district includes Lubbock, and my Republican friends there assure me there are enough Republicans there to vote Charlie out. I certainly hope so. He needs to have been voted out years ago!!

Thats the one...
When the scandal broke, before we had the internet, I did a little checking to see if our congress critter was involved.
Turned out that he was one of the dirtiest.
At the time I nick named him "Hot Check Charlie"
Since then I have actively campained against him, one of the many reasons I left the Democrats and became a Republican

My fault there. I was thinking of Fortney "Pete" Stark.

Stenholm has the greater name recognition, but he may be old and worn out. The voters will have to decide.

Stenholm's hope is that Abilene and Taylor Co. give him a huge vote out of city and county pride if not allegiance to the Democrats.

Didn't Stenholm's challenger get over 50% of the vote in Taylor County in 2002? It's not like Stenholm's all that popular in his home town. Unless every single farmer leaves the Republican Party they've been voting for years to vote for Stenholm because of his seniority in the Agriculture Committee (not bloody likely), I don't see how he can win. Stenholm's chances of reelection are slim and none, and slim just left the building.
