how is a 7.0 ten times bigger than a 6.1? That would be a 61.0! Each increment of 1.0 is a tenfold increase so 6.3 is twice as strong as 6.1.

I'll see if I can find my old dive logs..haven't been there in 20 years..but I'm sure anyone in a dive shop can point it out to you. As I seem to recall, a student, though an experienced diver was practicing deep dives with a instructor, descending down the wall..again this was in early 70's..big difference from today's equipment...something happened...and for whatever reason, they became disoriented, and descended instead of ascending..how they forgot the basic lesson...follow the bubbles..is one of the mysteries of the deep. Both were lost..the instructor's body was recovered, but the other guys was never found..The next year his parents had a plaque made up, names of both lost, dates, the usual..liek a headstone, and it was affixed to the wall, about 50 feet down, at the spot where they were lost..it was a very popular, and sobering spot for all divers to visit..

The Richter Scale or as they now use, orders of magnitude are just that. Think of them as exponents to the power of 10. In other words:

4.0 earthquake = 10 times as strong as a 3.0
5.0 = 10 times a 4.0 earthquake
6.0 = 10 times a 5.0 earthquake
7.0 = 10 times a 6.0 earthquake

...and so on, etc.
