Polish city of Krakow to name square after Ronald Reagan

The southern Polish city of Krakow decided Wednesday to name a square after former President Ronald Reagan in recognition of his role in ending communist rule.

Krakow councilors voted 19-17 to give the name "Ronald Reagan Square" to the main square in Nowa Huta, a communist-era development built around a major steel plant. Currently called Central Square, it was the scene of numerous protests by workers in communist times.

Reagan, who died at age 93 on June 5, is fondly remembered in Poland for his support of the anti-communist Solidarity movement during the period of martial law, imposed by Poland's communist authorities in 1981.

After the fall of communism, Krakow made him an honorary resident in recognition of the part he played in the system's collapse.

Opponents of the name change argued that Nowa Huta's residents had grown used to the square's existing name.

Krakow is one of few Polish cities, which weren't destroyed during the WW2.

I know, but despite the beauty of some of the buildings, it is the people who really made it stand out to me. And not any particular person or group...the people as a whole just struck me as special, warm and happy and most of all, alive and vibrant.

SShh, don't tell Dick Gephardt.

He shouldn't mind. Who do you think the Rusian's named the submarine "Gephardt" (Sometines translated Gephard) after? http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2001/6/12/115223.shtml http://www.hazegray.org/worldnav/

What's the problem with the 17 politicians that voted against naming the square after The Gipper?

Went to the RR Museum/Library in Simi Valley, CA last weekend.
Y'all don't visit Southern California without seeing it.

Probably brainwashed by free subscriptions to The New York Times given by
some American jack@$$ (Democrat).
Or less likely, too much reading of Pravda in the good old days.

This is good to know. I've been surprised by the feelings the Polish people have for the US, and Ronald Reagan. I'm afraid, that most of my life, I've gotten used to hearing how yet another nation/people hate the US for some imagined wrong.

This is political game, opponents (the left council members) would argue even against John Paul II square. Fortunately they lost regional elections and in next year we will have elections to the parliament and they may even don’t be in this next parliament. Do you realize parliament without left side!

The same people probably complained when Stalinogrod was changed back to it's proper name of Katowice.
