Life on the Ballot is supporting the Parents' Right to Know and Child Protection Initiative.

This initiative will require that one of the parents or guardian of a minor girl seeking an abortion be notified by the abortion provider before the abortion take place.
Signature gathering for this initiative will begin in early Fall 2004. We have 150 days to collect the required 598,015 signatures-- until early  2005.

Frequently Asked Questions  

•   What will passage of parental notification mean?
  It will mean that at least one parent be given 48 hours notice that their minor daughter (under 18 years of age) is scheduled to have an abortion.  The parents are then assured of being able to provide advice and counsel to her during this difficult time in her life.  The scheduled provider of the abortion will be required to make the notification.

• How will passage of this initiative benefit those on both sides of the abortion issue?
  Both sides would like to see a decrease in the number of unwanted pregnancies.  It is clear from the data in states that have similar laws already in place that passage of this initiative will change teen behavior, resulting in fewer unwanted teen pregnancies and therefore fewer abortions.  Given California's size and current abortion rate, it is reasonable to expect a minimum of 20,000 fewer abortions during the first year following passage of the initiative.

• How many other states have laws like this in place?
  31 states have either parental notification or parental consent laws on the books.

• What kind of initiative is this?
  The initiative is in the form of a constitutional amendment.

•   Is it legal to collect signatures at my church or school? Yes.  See the Becket Fund letter (below) for further information.

• What do the polls show?
  A Wirthlin poll taken in 2001 nation-wide showed 81 percent in favor of parental notification. A Zogby poll published in June, 2002, showed 71 percent in California in favor of parental notification.

The site says "We have 150 days to collect the required 598,015 signatures-- until early  2005."; So they aren't aiming for this Novembers ballot.
