After seven years of effort kicked off by a former Marine from Virginia, the U.S. Postal Service will issue a stamp next year honoring icon of the Corps Chesty Puller
"I'm ecstatic," said retired Marine Maj. Jacques Loraine. "I didn't think it was really going to happen, with the long delays and putoffs."
'snip'
Sometime next year, the Postal service will publish the "Distinguished Marines" block of stamps, featuring four Marine Corps heroes: Puller, Lt. Gen. John A. Lejeune, Sgt. Maj. Dan Daly and Gunnery Sgt. John Basilone.

Gee, they had Disney characters on stamps, but fought the idea of having Marines on the stamps?

This is great.
I know a couple of people back in New Jersey who've been working to get Basilone on a stamp for years.
Basilone was born in
Raritan, NJ. The parade this year is Sep 26.

Sgt. Basilone. Gave up an offer to become a commissioned officer in order to stay with his unit. Killed on Iwo Jima 2 years after receiving his MOH.

you can make your own stamps now, www.photostamps.com, but I have not been able to get into the website for days. it seems to be a craze, and the site is overwhelmed.

This is great I wish I had some of these stamps now to send to John Kerry so he could see what a real war hero looks like.

When Chesty was a cadet at VMI, the military asked for the rifles the cadets used in training. At this point, Chesty said "If the military needs my rifle, then they need me." He then left VMI to join the active duty service, and the rest is history.

John Basilone, Raritan, New Jersey. He is a local hero and a very nice statue of him stands near the Raritan River in town.
