Even before Zell Miller jumped Chris Matthews last week, I noticed something had changed. During the entire week, when an interviewer colored a question with anti-GOP shiboleths, the person being interviewed shot it down...aggressively.
I believe Karl Rove and gang perceives a wounded enemy after the damage the MediaCrats did to themselves over the Swifty story. The blogoshpere whipped their a$$ in that case.
I think the turning point was the Michelle Malkin interview on Hardball. It was such a grand display of the left's rhetorical trick of twisting what a conservative says and mistating their position over and over and over. Michelle was caught flat-footed by it...she should have directly challenged Chris's misquote. I think the Bushies said "never again". Note that Zell Miller, in his tirade against Matthews, referred back to the Malkin case.
It appears to me that, after the Malkin ambush, Rove and company decided it was time to smash the media's biased concept of conservatives. I believe the talking points must have gone out...don't take it anymore. Slap 'em when they preface a question with some insult to conservatives. When David Gergen tried the old trick of tying Zell to southern racists, Laura Ingraham jumped on him like a junkyard dog and forced him to retreat.
It happened time and again last week...conservatives refusing to move on until the host retracted some implication that the GOP is mean, heartless, racist, etc. This is new to me. Did anyone else notice it?
I noticed it, but didn't think it through. I believe you have a point. I hope you are correct.
Franken got into it with Laura Ingrahm's producer. For more photos:

Maybe between the Swift Vets and the convention, the Republicans are finding a backbone, but I think you may have a point about them seeing the vulnerable state of the DNC's media lapdogs and they are emboldened by it. Add to that the recognition that this is a critical election. We cannot afford to give Kerry the presidency to add to his list of fraudulently claimed honors. We are not willing to sacrifice our families and our future to this man's ego.
Sure, I proudly stole it myself!
I agree with everything you said. But my point is that I think there's been a change in STRATEGY, not just in tactics.
Ever since Clinton, the obvious conventional wisdom has been that you ignore an interviewer's questions and simply lay out your previously prepared talking points. Conservatives have suddenly turned that CW on its head. Last week they were very specifically paying attention to the question...and then throwing it back in the asker's face. It happened too often to be a coincidence.
I don't care if it was Karl Rove or Zell Miller who came up with the strategy. All I'm saying is it's a good one and it spread too fast to be accidental.
Makes me wonder if maybe someone's been showing old Lee Atwater footage at strategy sessions. Now THERE was a mongrel dog of a campaigner.!
First, they throw personal attacks and a pack of lies at their critics.
Let's hope the success contines...
Thank you.
I changed jobs back at the beginning of the summer. In my previous job, I worked with a lot of people who were very vocal in their opposition to the president (I didn't hear any of them complaining about their tax rebates though, or the increase in the child credits), some of whom thought the sun rose and set on Bill Clinton. Most knew that I supported the president and even that I'd been one of the people who protested Hillary when she was on her Lying History tour. It wasn't addressed too much. As you might expect, these were not the sharpest tools in the shed.
On my new job, I have made several off-handed and politically incorrect remarks, and had no sense of being inappropriate at all. I have also discussed some conservative issues, without putting a political face on them, and have found mostly agreement. On a few occasions, I've been unable to resist throwing a shot at Kerry or Clinton or praising the president for his handling of the war. Again, no sense of having crossed any line. Even though by policy, we're not allowed to promote any political party in the workplace, I do get the feeling that I'm among conservatives, for the most part. It's a nice change. Outside of work, I make no secret about where I stand, either. In fact, I think I might take a ride down to the Republican headquarters here this morning and see if they're open for business. I need some yard signs.
Excellent observation which I agree with one hundred percent. About time the conservatives stood up to the biased media; and just like a playground bully, they retreat when confronted. Hope to see more of it.
Great posts! I'm curious to know how many votes Kerry missed in the US Senate. I understand he missed many votes and would like to know the exact figures. Do you know where that information can be found or if it has be compiled?
Liberals are as unacquainted with etiquette as they are with propriety and truth. Expecting appropriate behavior from a liberal is like expecting a pig to curtsy. (Actually, a pig can be taught to curtsy).
You have summed up their "policy" accurately. Not only does it not help, it has been observed that it almost always makes things worse.
But it may take more than one hand and a few decades...
