Anybody know what would happen if Bush/Cheney win ... and Cheney were to "step down" due to heart problems. Can Bush choose a VP? How does that work? It would be nice if Giuliani was a VP incumbent.

It would be nice if rudy realized he wasn't fit to be elected to national office.

President Bush would nominate someone. Congress would confirm.

Bush would choose the VP, like Nixon picked Ford and Ford picked Rockefeller.
IIRC he would have to be confirmed by the Senate.
I doubt this would happen unless Cheney had some serious heart problems, because it wouldn't look all that great to the GOP faithful for the lameduck White House to try and annoint its successor.

Guiliani would blow the dems out of the water in 2008. He would be a marvelous president.

Giulani would not make a good VP,he's too liberal to be a heart beat away from the Presidency. 'Sides I think his wife said "no."

It would be nice if Giuliani was a VP incumbent.Nothing negative about Giuliani, but given the international security situation right now, I want Cheney right where he is. There is no one else around who can do that job except perhaps Rumsfeld, only Cheney is a better politician and Rumsfeld already has a vital job.

Of course Bush can pick a new VP if Cheney ever steps down. But I hope it isn't Rudy. We need Rudy to exorcise the Hillary demon in 2006. The senatorial match-up that should have been in 2000. Rudy will destroy Hillary and with it, any chance Hillary had to be the Dem nominee in 2008 (which isn't much to begin with).

I'm too lazy to check if someone answered... the Prez proposes, the Congress disposes (as the old saying goes). At the local Gerald R. Ford Museum there's a small exhibit in the area dealing with Ford's ascent to the presidency -- the reprehensible Bella Abzug wanted to reject Ford and appoint a liberal Democrat to the VP, figuring that Nixon would soon be gone one way or the other. "Don't let those bastards keep this" (meaning the P/VP) were her words to some mover and shaker. George W. Bush will be reelected by a margin of at least ten per cent
