I still haven't figured out how a guy with a military and a senate pension becomes a multi-millionaire. Maybe we're paying these guys too much-- or their lobbyists are.

Benefactors steered him into buying a few shares of Holiday Inn stock before it skyrocketed in the 1960s.

Wow-- must have been quite a few shares. In the 60's Holiday Inn was little more than rising competition for the then declining Howard Johnson's and the franchised Best Western. Couldn't have sold for too much-- it was a pretty "low rent" outfit as I recall.
