On this Labor Day week-end here in Iraq, football was in the air. Early this morning soldiers were watching ESPN on satellite TV and listening to their favorite team on the radio via the internet. Amazing how we can be 7,000 miles away enjoying live broadcasts from back home.
To celebrate Labor Day here we will have a Task Force run, some social gatherings, drink some near-beer (non-alcoholic beer), some might swim in our backyard pools and some might even sing a little karaoke. And if we had some shot-guns wed be shooting some of the biggest doves youll ever see.
The attacks in Iraq this week were significantly lower. The nation-wide cease fire called by Muqtada Al Sadr seems to be working. The future of the radical cleric Al Sadr is uncertain. Some Shia on Shia violence did occur this week as an Iraqi investigation is underway about atrocities committed against citizens of An Najaf. It appears over the past few weeks Sadrs Militia set up a (kangaroo) court in the Mosque and executed some Iraqis because they would not support the Sadr cause.
The new Iraqi Governing Council (parliament) convened for the first time this week. The Iraqi balance of power is now coming together as they elected their Speaker. Great progress is being made as the Council sets their agenda to handle the problems facing the Iraqi Interim Government today, and to prepare the country for free elections in January 2005.
The reality of the Global War on terrorism became even more evident in Russia with the two airplane crashes and more than 300 innocent school children killed. Among the dead terrorist, nine were of Arab decent, which suggests a connection between Al Qaida terrorist we face here in Iraq and the Chechen terrorist the Russians face. The Global War on terrorism continues to be fought by many countries on many different fronts. Thank God, America has not been attacked since 9/11.
Hope everyone back home has a relaxing Labor Day. We look forward to next year when we can be there with you. As always thank you for your fantastic support, thoughts and prayers. God is with us!
