Brinkley Jumping Ship?
Power Line ^ | 9/5/04 | John H. Hinderaker

Posted on 09/05/2004 4:18:53 PM PDT by CT

Douglas Brinkley, author of the John Kerry biography Tour of Duty, was on Steve Malzberg's radio show today. He called on John Kerry to release his military records, saying: "Clearly some of these military records should be made available to the press."

Brinkley also said that if the Navy investigation reveals deception in connection with Kerry's medals, it "could be" the "death knell" for Kerry's campaign. Professing uncertainty about what to make about the Swift Boat Vets' claims, Brinkley said:

Right now it's unclear. So we have to just wait to see what all this adds up to.

While the piece linked to above provides only brief excerpts from the Brinkley interview, it sounds like he is trying to distance himself from Kerry, and has less than full confidence in Kerry's honesty. Considering that Brinkley's book has been termed a hagiography, and that until now he has been an unabashed advocate for Kerry, that's a striking development.

"Why does this thing smell?"

'Coz Brinkley needs to cover his a$$ if he wants to maintain any respect as a journalist/biographer. Clearly he wasn't given the whole truth (the "secret diary" & service records) by Kerry, and knowing that, Brinkley published regardless.

It looks as if Brinkley thinks there's more to life than backing Kerry, esp. since he's noticed, along with the rest of the country, that his boy has assumed room temperature. He has a career to think about, nobody will take him seriously unless he distances himself from Botoxboy and fast.

Kerry had to have signed an SF180. The forms he has on his website are available ONLY through an SF180.
However I do believe that Brinkley is getting off the swift boat. Truth is he works at Haaaarvaaad, so he has a job for life. And TRex will pay him to do didley for many years to come.

Me thinks Mr. Brinkley's historian rep going down the tube with Kerry.

Stay tuned for more revelations.

Brinkley better not go out alone at night. He evidently knows a lot of secrets about Kerry's past.

According to Terry Lipscombe who was on Rush's show last Friday, once that form 180 is signed, anyone can get all Kerry's military records under the freedom of information act.

I'm starting to really think that Kerry won't make it to Election Day. The Dems/libs want Bush out too bad to let their current nominee keep going in a mortally wounded state. I hear the trampling of the Hildebeast underbrush...

Don't kid yourself. The Clintons never wanted Kerry to become President and are helping him fail. Hillary wouldn't dare enter this race now. She would get trampled too. She will be running in 2008, no doubt.

Absolutely 100% wrong.
I've signed my 180 and I designated who will get it. In my case me. Whoever signs the 180 has control.

Hmm, I meant that reply to you...I hear the dreaded Hildebeast, too. Once Bill is back home, which won't be long after he's operated on this week, she'll be on the prowl.

Brinkley is definitely trying to save his reputation in case of a total Kerry implosion. I understand everyone's paranoia about this whole records issue, but Kerry's not acting like someone who has nothing to hide. He's definitely scared about something in his records. Why else would he be complaining about the book and the commercials if they're based on lies. His released navy records could have put an end to this dilemna and he'd be up several points right now.

Problem with BJ
After they operate on him, he will operate on the nurses.
Only way to prove he really is alive.

Hmmm, Lipscombe said that anyone would have access to the records once that form was signed. Maybe you have to check a box agreeing to that? He also said GW hadn't signed the 180 form.

Well, if I were Brinkley, I'd distance myself too, if he EVER want another writing job after Kerry's real truth is revealed.

AS a former Air Force Officer I can not understand how Kerry got a good discharge. His efficiency reports most likely indicate how he really was in Viet Nam.
Surely some Officer over him saw the problem while he was on active duty. Reports likely are indictive of what are really in the reports. Hopefully someone has them now and maybe they will be posted on the net prior to the election.
Free Republic would be a good forum to study these reports.
