The president is elected by vote of The Electoral Collage, rather than by direct popular election. I think the popular election in November is actually for a slate of electors who are pledged to a particular candidate and who are, at least in most states, not under any legal obligation to vote as pledged. Since the Democrat Party has qualified a slate of electors, it may be that they could vote for anyone they wanted, including Senator Clinton.
