JERUSALEM, Sept. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon proposed Israel and Russia work together to fight terror, Israel Radio reported Sunday.

Sharon is expected to discuss the issue Monday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who will be visiting Israel, the radio said.

In a message of condolence to Russia, Sharon said Israel stands by Russia's side in this difficult period.

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom also expressed his condolences, saying the attack on innocent civilians proves that terror has no borders.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday demanded a drastic shakeup of security forces' tactics against terror after a school siege in southern Russia by Chechen militants that ended in the deaths of some 330 people, nearly half of them children.

Putin admitted that authorities had failed to recognize or react effectively to the threats facing his country.

Russia can use Israel's help to prepare for the next onslaught. I thought this was a touching offer from Sharon. My hope is that what he really meant is "let us come and show you how to deal with these scum".

The times indeed come.

And if China has any decency they will forget about conquering Taiwan and and join the fight against the terrorists instead.

I'm afraid Sharon may be a few hours late with his offer. Here's an article from tody's Moscow Times. Notice that the Islam factor is quite downplayed.

Russia, Saudi Arabia promise joint anti-terror action
Interfax. Sunday, Sep. 5, 2004, 8:32 PM Moscow Time
MOSCOW. Sept 5 (Interfax) - Russia and Saudi Arabia expressed determination on Sunday to build up joint efforts in combating terrorism, the Kremlin said, citing a telephone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah.

Abdullah, who called Putin, "offered the Russian president and the entire Russian people his sincere and deep condolences in connection with the monstrously brutal terrorist acts in Beslan and wished them staunchness in this hard time," the Russian president's press service said in a release.

"It was specially emphasized on both sides that neither Islam nor any other world region has anything to do with terrorism, which has no nationality or religious face," the release said.

I know it's been said so much it's almost a cliche, but that's only because it is so true:

We are all Israelis now.

The real wind is blowing in Russia, not in Florida.

The muslims in Russia are actually very peaceful and were outspoken in denouncing our 9-11, very quickly on Lenta.ru. It's the wahabis in chechnya and some other surrounding areas who are the problem.

Wahhabism is not allowed in Russia and nor is their literature. You can go to prison for being Wahhabi in Russia, I believe. They made it a hate crime or something similar.

The Saudis are so deep into this, I don't see how come we allow a single one of them to breath another day.

I wonder if they will discuss Russia's continued support to Iran's nuclear effort?

"The muslims in Russia are actually very peaceful..."

That's reassuring.

"It's the wahabis in chechnya and some other surrounding areas who are the problem."

My understanding is that ObL is a wahabi, and that wahabism is a major sect in Saudi. Do the wahabis control the moslem religious schools that are cranking out soldiers to fight in the holy war? Perhaps if Prince Abdullah is really getting serious about combating terrorism, he'll finally have to deal with the wahabis.

It's WONDERFUL. I have been discussing with many freepers the continual losses Russia has taken at the hands of terrorist scum and of course even Putin said his special forces blew it.

Change is needed, I have been saying. What Russia has been doing is nothing but keepting the islamic radicals busy, so far, and saving the rest of us from having to deal with them. They have lost so many in the process.

When I read this last night I saw a gleam of hope. If the IDF can train the Russians to better tactics, perhaps Russia can protect herself better in the future.

It was Israel in Moscow during the Nord Ost attack who came up with the brilliant plans about the gas, I believe, because Lenta.ru reported that the Israelis were there in fairly decent numbers working on the building layout.
And before I get flamed it was a brilliant idea. They just didn't know how to dose the gas, which was the downfall.

Then too it is true, and this is part of why the official in North Ossetia resigned, that Basayev has always boasted of being able to bribe his truckloads of explosives all the way to Moscow.
I suspect police bribery was behind some of those explosives being pre-planted at the school, or the police unwittingly hired some terrorists who helped out. This is why Putin has closed the area to travel until he can find those guilty.

This was not behind the killing of the children, though I understand it grates on some freepers.
