Space signal studied for alien contact

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- An unexplained radio signal from deep space could -- just might be -- contact from an alien civilization, New Scientist magazine reported on Thursday. The signal, coming from a point between the Pisces and Aries constellations, has been picked up three times by a telescope in Puerto Rico. There are other explanations besides extraterrestrial contact that may explain the signal. New Scientist said the signal could be generated by a previously unknown astronomical phenomenon or even be a by-product from the telescope itself. But the mystery beam has excited astronomers across the world. "If they can see it four, five or six times it really begins to get exciting," Jocelyn Bell Burnell of the University of Bath in western England told the magazine. It was broadcast on the main frequency at which the universe's most common element, hydrogen, absorbs and emits energy, and which astronomers say is the most likely means by which aliens would advertise their presence. The potentially extraterrestrial signals were picked up through the SETI+home project, which uses programs running as screensavers on millions of personal computers worldwide to sift through the huge amount of data picked up by the telescope.

Who saw the movie CONTACT?

More importantly, who saw the movie "Independence Day"?

Yes; the head nerd at SETI@Home has basically debunked the initial report; he said the reporter apparently blew things out of proportion.

there's already a couple of threads on this topic....

Yes, sounds like CONTACT. Havn't heard anything after the first postings in the news.

Uh oh. If these are the only aliens broadcasting their presence to the galaxy at large they can't be very smart ones. Something's liable to go eat them soon. =)

Has anybody calculated how far away a civilization as noisy as we are would have to be to not be detectable? It seems to me that if there is intelligent life out there, they are very quiet.

Then that takes care of that...

Great timing if it were true... would have given George another bounce! :-)

Updates? Yes, this was no more than an overzealous journalist going way beyond reality.

That would be smart.

No updates, which is not unusual. After the ALH-8000 fiasco, everyone's been a little skittish about jumping up and down and proclaiming these incidents as evidence of extraterrestrial life or extraterrestrial intelligence.

In addition, even if this is extraterrestrial intelligence at work, a working dialogue is going to be an exercise in patience, consider that the distance and speed of radio signals will require over a century for us just to exchange greetings.

It's a radio signal from K-Pax(which would be k-pax). The message describes a visit from a great earth warrior during the year 1968 on the 359th lunar day. He visited a place on the planet called Cambodia.

They are awaiting his return to issue him a ceremonial purple pulmonary device.

That depends. If they'd only been haphazardly broadcasting electromagnetic waves in large quantities for about 20-30 years like we have (and those not actually targetted away from the planet) then they would be undetectable if they're further than 15 or so light years away....

Either that, or they are the cosmos' version of the deep sea fish that use bio-luminescence to draw in their prey.

They have diagnosed the signal. It is saying "four more years".
