I know several quiet, long-term monogamous gay couples (friends and family). So I support some sort of gay civil union, but not something directly equivalent to marriage, a sacrament in the Christian churches. I suppose my beliefs are not dissimilar to the Vice President's.

Goodness knows, there's enough promiscuity in the gay community; anything that encourages mature, caring relationships cannot be all bad.

Gay Marriage does not stop promiscuity in the gay relationship. Promiscuity defines homosexuality.

Well, take a look at the Western nations that have been trying same-sex unions for some time and see if you still think so.

The question is whether the people and their elected representatives will get to decide whether or not to recognize 'some sort of gay union', or if recognition will be imposed upon them by the courts.

Hopefully it will ultimately be the former, and as such the gay community and their allies would just have to accept it that many, or probabably even most states would not grant their unions any legal status. But they could take comfort in knowing they could move to the Northeast, or West Coast where majority sentiment may be on their side.
