That moment you describe when Gore tried to get in Bush's space and be an alpha male to Bush's amused look and nod,,that was the day Bush won the election. I swear, it is so.

The "NOD" was the perfect response - I still remember that well.

Techinically, there are no minimum or maximum number of debates. They aren't required by law to even occurr at all. Traditionally though, I remember seeing at least 2 debates in the preceding elections.

I am starting to think that this Yale debating team thing is way overestimated by pundits. After all, I have seen and vidoes and read transcripts of many debates, and political debates are NOTHING like the strictly formatted debates with their propostion affirming/denying standpoints. IE debate team experience will avail nothing in a presidential debate, as they are not really debates but rather point/counterpoint contests.

I agree. The debate is more about how a candidate comes off in a gestalt way. Flaws really show in a televised debate--Nixons flop sweat, Dukaikis's essential separation from his own emotional life after the Kitty rape and murder question, Gore's ridiculous posturing and make up revealing his total lack of personhood and definition. Kerry will not do well,,he will lecture, make us feel like servants, have angry poses. Bush will come across as serious, generous, kind, defined, smart, dignified and a real human being.

Last I heard the Bush people were talking two debates. But that shouldn't stop Kerry. He could always use the first slot to debate himself.

"My opponent in the mirror voted to support the war before he voted to not to support it."

"I'll not allow my image to insult my resolve to confuse my position!"

"How dare my horse-faced image question my patriotism when he had gotten deferments from so many crucial Senate votes!"

He could always use the first slot to debate himself.

That's MY question - how do you win a debate against someone who's taken every side on every issue?

A: "You said..."

B: "You misquote me. What I said was..."

Not to worry. There are so many ways to bash Kerry's flip flops.

I am sure Bush has several choice phrases ready and waiting.
