While the nations of europe have quietly retired from history - at least the history of great national combats - and placed their faith in international institutions and laws, the United States has entered upon another epic struggle that it sees as defining for the future of mankind.

Europe can afford to retire from history because they know that the United States will protect their freedom. It is the strength and will of the United States that allows the Europeans to act irresponsibly without bearing the consequences of their foolishness.
