It can be defended against. But at the moment the civilized world lacks the will to do what needs to be done; namely, the extermination of the subhuman scum.

The "clerics" need to be held responsible for inciting the subhuman scum.

We finance terrorists every time we fill up our own gas tanks....

The real source of terrorism is in their 'Book' and the pure form is taught in the one
nation we will not attack...Our troops are doing a great job pursuing them in some countries yet we have given the terrorist's ideological sources sanctuaries as we did the NVA and VC

As long as the ideological source is flowing new terrorists will be raised up to replace the old
there is an endless supply of them as their is the oil that supports them...and our favored nation trading partners all too happy to sell them the weapons they cannot produce for themselves an provide them with advisers and training...

The USA allows the building of Mosques and Islamic Centers in areas that have little if any Muslim population...Why would our enemies want to do this...why do we allow and encourage them to do so.

We allow them to sneak across our borders openly hiding among the so called illegal alien 'workers'...

We employ Wahhabi Chaplains in our military and in our prisons...one group trained in tactics and able to pass that training on...the other immersed in violence and hatred..

In the middle of our so called 'war on terror' we have left a large 'back door' open for our enemies..

We have created Homeland Security and beefed up TSA (who still drags its feet and through bureaucratic stall tactics has still not armed our commercial pilots on people haulers and freight haulers)

Until we go after the ideological source of terror...their financing and their arms brokers...we will always have terrorists..and until we get rid of those training centers in our nation and control the borders and arm our pilots....we can also expect a few sucessfull attacks...

(which of course will buy us nothing more than very expensive...do nothing bureaucratic feet draggers and paper shufflers)

imo

This is not the beginning. This has been ongoing. Look back in History. We have to be one America to beat these low lifes that will kill us and their own children by making Martyrs out of them. I'm not being Political at all in this. You cannot beat people like this with the more the sensitive mr. kerry and his ambulance chasing wonder boy.

Don't get me wrong, what happened in North Ossetia was an act of unspeakable barbarity, and one that merits a swift, coordinated and forceful response.

But let us put this in a little context. Vladimir Putin, a scheming, dangerous ex-KGB head honcho, is seeking carte blanche for a brutal response in Chechnya.

For much of the late 1990s, Putin waged a war against the Chechen people that was characterised by countless human rights abuses and the deaths of thousands of civilians -- one that was condemned around the world.

Do we want to see a return to that?

Before I am accused of shameless peacenickery by those rightly appalled at yesterday's events who would point out that many, perhaps most Chechens support the Islamic separatists and their al-Qa'eda backers, can I point the following out:

If Putin was motivated by a genuine determination to defeat terrorism around the world rather than by a desire to revive Russia as a superpower, would he not have been a little more supportive of the U.S. and Britain over the last two years, rather than placing himself firmly in the France camp?

It is not as though terrorist acts like yesterday's are new in Russia. The Moscow apartment bombings preceded 9/11

I think it most unlikely. If they were really thinking about timing, they would be aware that an attack like this as the time of the convention is only likely to stiffen resolve and therefore would play into the hands of Bush.

While many things in the world revolve around America, not quite everything does...

I disagree. This is related to Russia and the US. They are still operating in the mode odf Spain. They believe that if the can do something that will just indicate to us of what they may do to us that support for Bush will decrease.

I think this is an attempt to affect the polls coming out concerning the convention. Look at when the standoff ended. Al Q has a global strategy.

It is similar to what the Dems are doing now, trying to affect the polls between now and Monday.

Its a No-Win scenerio. The World's horror makes this a rousing success for Al Queda. Because it cannot be defended against, you can expect to see this happen again, and again, and again. ---> BTW, notice the great silence from muslin clerics about this. There was no great cry from Saudi Arabia, or Jordan, or Eqypt to "Let the children go!" Islam IS the enemy...

I think many good people tend to forget the darker side of Human Nature. Here is a gentle reminder:

Not long ago, there was a civilized country that gave the world much culture and scientific attainment. They became infuriated about "an enemy within", and more than six million people were killed, for nothing much more than talking funny and running pawn shops.

No one is immune to this, especially where slaughter of innocents are concerned, no matter how well-meaning, or how Liberal.

Bluntly put, if these acts continue, there will certainly come a time when there are not going to be any Muslims, anywhere. It took only the flimsiest excuses for the Holocaust to happen.

There is nothing flimsy about 9-11 or this latest outrage. I am NOT talking about hate, but about something colder: The kind of grim determination a person feels who sees a cockroach and reaches for the spray can. It is not hatred, but simply the recognition that there is a somewhat disagreeable job to be done, then, onto the next thing-Mowing the lawn, and cleaning the carpets.

Very well put! After all is said and done, it comes down to the simple fact that America is going to have to change its mindset! Religious freedom is one of the pillars of our wonderful country and its way of life that is the envy of the world, but using that freedom to plan deadly attacks on us must be declared unacceptable. Times have changed and if we don't adjust our tactics to adapt to the changes it will be the end of our 200 year experiment with freedom. These are not Catholics playing bingo in the church basement every Tuesday night or Baptists meeting to discuss how to air condition the fellowship hall or Methodists planning a car wash to pay for the youth to go to camp or Jehovah's Witnesses laying out plans for their next canvas of a neighborhood. These are killers who hate us and our way of life and are willing to use our freedoms against us to further their plans. I don't know what the answer is. I am deeply disturbed that almost half the population of America considers John Kerry as the solution instead of part of the problem.

"I think this attack was a test. It is a precursor of things to come...

I think this is not far from the truth. I truly believe America is filled with sleeper cells, waiting for the moment. I pray this is not the case. But we have no real way of knowing. They are waiting for the right moment. Common sense tells us that election time is a very vulnerable time.

It is important for Americas left to get their heads straight and join the ONE AMERICA for the fight. Support the Patriot Act. Support our president in war time. Support our troops. The enemy loves the fact that we are a politically divided nation. That is exactly what they want. And the LEFT plays right into their hands. United, we will stand. Divided, we may fall. My prayers go out to our president, our troops, their families and the families of those killed by acts of terrorism. God Bless America!

Chechen separatists have been launching attacks on Russia for years, well before 9/11.

There is no doubt that they have support from al-Qa'eda, not least because they all fought together with the Mujahudeen in Afghanistan in the 80s. Consequently they are united in their hatred of Moscow, whether it is communist or not.

But this is the fourth siege of its kind to end in bloodshed. The primary objective of these terrorists is the independence of Chechnya.

Nonetheless attacks like these, especially when there are no American casualties, serve to bolster President Bush. It is not as though this was an attack on a country like Spain that had troops in Iraq.

There is something we can do. I believe that most men and women should take safety and self defense training, handgun training, and become capable of defending others.

We need to adopt more of a warrior mentality.

That plan - provided the armed adults have the training and will to IMMEDIATELY begin shooting (which is unlikely in our procedure-based, lawsuit happy modern socities)- would deal with the odd nutball or two. In this case, there were 20 to 30 terrorists armed with AK-47s, suicide belts, and bags of explosives. Essentially, it was a platoon assault. No reasonable school security force could or should be expected to deal with that.

Ok, we'll just leave schools defenseless to having our children slaughtered.

Armed adults in every school may not fend off a military assault but undefended schools invite even a lone terrorist to murder at will.

Something is better than nothing. A lone, armed bank guard can be overwhelmed by a large armed force of bank robbers but the banks don't use an all or nothing approach and neither should our schools.

The start?

Russia has been dealing with terrorism of this sort, almost all al Queda connected, since before 9/11. This one only differs in that they directly, instead of indirectly, involved children.

This is far from the start. If anything, it is the start of the end as Russia and some fence-sitting nations decide they want to help our effort globally instead of treating their problems as internal issues.

Unfortunately, the Russian military appears to be in pretty bad shape.

Well at least next year's Russian military budget is up 40%.

It is not as though terrorist acts like yesterday's are new in Russia.

At the time of the Afghanistan war, the CIA was also funneling support to Islamic terrorists in the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Western China. This was via the Saudis and Pakistan.

Thanks for the link, TH. It proves that the Islamic killers were responsible.

We're in deep trouble if our porous borders aren't closed tight.

This tactic will be the beginning of the end for Islam. A religion without moral authority has nothing. It will take generations for the corpse to rot, but it is dead.

A reassuring but unconvincing thought. How long has it been since Mohammed himself carried out his atrocities during his climb to power?
