WEST ALLIS, Wis. — President Bush, ignoring press derision of Zell Miller, yesterday began invoking him on the campaign trail, which brought raucous applause from voters who share the fiery Georgian's opposition to fellow Democratic Sen. John Kerry.
"Zell Miller of Georgia, he's a discerning Democrat," Mr. Bush told a rally in Moosic, Pa., his first stop after accepting the party's nomination Thursday. The audience of 8,000 exploded in cheers.
The reaction was even more dramatic at the president's next stop here, where the crowd of 20,000 made more noise than any other gathering the president has addressed during the campaign. One of those cheering the loudest was Brian Lunde, national co-chairman of Democrats for Bush.
"You know, Brian and Zell Miller, they're on to something," Mr. Bush said. "There's a lot of discerning Democrats who understand that four more years will make this country safer, stronger and better.
"And this campaign welcomes all Democrats and independents," he added. "Our vision includes everybody. Our message is for every single citizen in this country."
Mr. Miller electrified the convention on Wednesday by delivering an impassioned endorsement of Mr. Bush and an attack on Mr. Kerry that Democrats and the press called overly strident.
"I pick up the New York Times this morning and read that it was 'bizarre,' " Mr. Miller marveled in an interview. "The media is way out of touch on this; they're out on the extreme left with John Kerry."

I think Carl Rove has got some new numbers and it's showing that the biggest bump came from Zell Miller. That would explain the POTUS freely invoking his name now. This is great news!

I thought Zell Miller was wonderfully refrained. I bet he had more than few invectives that he restrained himself from using due to a sensitivity of the world politik.
We should ask Zell for the rated R version of his speech that ended up on the cutting room floor.
Of course McCain would probably consider an upward surge in numbers the wrong direction for his purposes.

I am totally astonished, although I shouldn't be, that the lame stream media keeps calling Senator Miller's speech an attack on J F'n K's patriotism. I listened to that speech, (IMHO one of the greatest speeches I have heard in a very long time) never once did he call Kerry unpatriotic. He simply put forth Kerry's voting record and told everyone what Kerry was about. I did not see him come off as an angry old man, but more as an angry Democrat, whose party has turned into a den of snakes, spewing a warning to others that if they don't do something now, they will lose their party to left wing extremists.
We need an obligatory "Spitball Kerry" photo.
I read somewhere that Zell's speech was actually toned down from his original text...??

I think you're on to something here. All the stuff about how horrible Zell's speech was was just Democrat spin to deflect.

I thought Zell Miller would be great for the us, and right wing guys would love it, but that the middle, moderates, centerists, independents would hate it.
I was wrong, alot of people who were on the fence (and remember this is nyc, where everyone starts off left of center) are now die hards on not just Bush but the whole GOP. I can only imagine the rest of the country. Sometimes I'm glad to be wrong.
Sometimes I think that they really don't get that it IS the American soldier that is responsible for it.
That was one reason Matthews was all jumpy, before old Zell slapped him around. He tried to question Zell on it and Zell made him admit it was true, about three times, lol.
