EU wants explanation from Moscow on hostage storming
03 September 2004 = = The EU refused Friday to rush to judgment on how Russian authorities acted in the bloody end to the hostage crisis in north Ossetia, but said it wants Moscow's explanation of the tragedy.
"It is premature now, without knowing the exact situation, to make a judgment on the way the Russian authorities acted," said Dutch Foreign Minister Bernard Bot, whose country currently holds the European Unionpresidency.
"We first have to evaluate the situation with the knowledge of all the details," he told reporters at the end of the first day of a two-day meeting of EU foreign ministers in the southern Netherlands.
But in a later statement Friday evening Bot said the EU will be seeking an explanation from Moscow.
"All countries in the world need to work together to prevent tragedies like this. But we also would like to know from the Russian authorities how this tragedy could have happened."
The comments came after around 100 were killed and over 550 injured as crack troops stormed a school in southern Russia, freeing children and adults held hostage for almost three days by militants demanding independence for Chechnya.
Earlier in the day Bot called the denouement of the hostage crisis in the town of Beslan a "deep human tragedy" and said it appeared that authorities "considered very carefully this situation before deciding to take this action."
Speaking following afternoon talks, he added that "as figures are coming in it turns out that the drama is even greater than I thought."
He notably said that "perhaps at a later date" European leaders could discuss "with our Russian friends" the possibility of creating a joint anti-terrorism force.
"We should also eventually look into what has happened and discuss ... measures that can be taken to prevent such situations from occurring," he added.
two in one day---this re Russia and solina telling israel to leave syria alone..i think the EU should be added to axis of evil--or at least "girlie men"
YEAH!!!!
!1776! for Russian President!!
First reaction from EU... not condolences and sympathies, but interrogating the victim. What a$$-clowns
Explain. What is this latest about Israel? Maybe Syria should stop the flow of its terrorists into Iraq (and Lebanon for that matter) Never forget the 200 troops killed in the Beirut bombing!!!
And Putin should tell the EU to shut the [blank] up!
I've got your explanation right here: SHOVE IT!
Earth to the EU - If Terrorist are keeping hundreds of children in a sweltering hot gymnasium and not allowing food and water to get to them, the terrorists are in the act of killing the children. In that situation storming the school was the only option.
Translation: The Euroweenies want to dictate to Russia just like they want to dictate to us. Screw the EU!
Yeah you Ruskies better explain why you tried to save those children. and how dare you bother the Islamofascist Terrorists. After all, YOU PROBABLY HAVE MADE THEM MAD
The EU can be a member of the axis of whining weasels or the axis of girlie men. They don't qualify as an Axis of Evil Country.
yes.
EU = France = cheese eating surrender monkeys
Egypt on Friday disputed Israeli allegations of Syrian complicity in the bus bombings in Be'er Sheva on Tuesday, in which 16 people were killed, and said it was illogical for Israel to threaten to retaliate against Syria.
"There is no evidence of a link between the explosions which took place in Israel and Syria," Egyptian presidential spokesman Maged Abdel Fattah told reporters.
"So we consider that these threats are beyond logic," he added, speaking after talks in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh between Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
On Wednesday Israel threatened Syria over what officials said was complicity in the suicide bombings carried out by Palestinian militants.
Abdel Fattah said the Egyptian government was in talks on the matter with the Israeli, U.S. and other governments and that Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit and intelligence chief Omar Suleiman plan to visit Israel in the middle of September.
European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana on Friday criticized Israeli threats against Syria following the Be'er Sheva suicide bombings.
"I don't think it's helpful to start talking about attacking new countries. The situation in the Middle East is complicated enough," Solana told reporters on arriving for an EU foreign ministers' meeting in the Netherlands.
He said he did not believe the United States would support such threats.
Solana was responding to reported comments by Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz that Israel could not disconnect the attacks in Be?er Sheva, the deadliest for six months, from what he called activity in Lebanon and Syria.
The Palestinian Islamic militant group Hamas, which claimed responsibility for the attacks, has offices in Syria and Israel has alleged that many bombings perpetrated inside the Jewish state are planned or orchestrated from Damascus.
Security sources said Israel would respond to Tuesday?s bombings by renewing its campaign of killing Hamas leaders in the Palestinian territories and abroad.
Israel launched a rare air raid against a suspected Palestinian training camp deep inside Syria last October. Hamas political leader Khaled Meshal is based in Damascus.
Solana said the more important message to Syria came from a United Nations Security Council resolution adopted on Thursday urging the withdrawal of foreign forces from Lebanon and warning against interference in that country's politics.
Just another Euro-trash girlie boy.
sometimes evil is just standing around and looking away when bullies kill children like today in russia
Has Bot ever heard of the Islamo-terrorists, you know, those creatures that murder innocent children, women, old people---anyone they can to make their sick point? The Euros, like this EU leader, are absolutely ignorant--beyond redemption.
I saw the pictures.
Their response to the e.u. should be "Go to Hell!"
Actually, the EU should have consulted with Botox Johnny and he could have relayed the inquiry to the UN and Chirac.
