Egypt on Friday disputed Israeli allegations of Syrian complicity in the bus bombings in Be'er Sheva on Tuesday, in which 16 people were killed, and said it was illogical for Israel to threaten to retaliate against Syria.
"There is no evidence of a link between the explosions which took place in Israel and Syria," Egyptian presidential spokesman Maged Abdel Fattah told reporters.
"So we consider that these threats are beyond logic," he added, speaking after talks in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh between Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
On Wednesday Israel threatened Syria over what officials said was complicity in the suicide bombings carried out by Palestinian militants.
Abdel Fattah said the Egyptian government was in talks on the matter with the Israeli, U.S. and other governments and that Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit and intelligence chief Omar Suleiman plan to visit Israel in the middle of September.
European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana on Friday criticized Israeli threats against Syria following the Be'er Sheva suicide bombings.
"I don't think it's helpful to start talking about attacking new countries. The situation in the Middle East is complicated enough," Solana told reporters on arriving for an EU foreign ministers' meeting in the Netherlands.
He said he did not believe the United States would support such threats.
Solana was responding to reported comments by Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz that Israel could not disconnect the attacks in Be?er Sheva, the deadliest for six months, from what he called activity in Lebanon and Syria.
The Palestinian Islamic militant group Hamas, which claimed responsibility for the attacks, has offices in Syria and Israel has alleged that many bombings perpetrated inside the Jewish state are planned or orchestrated from Damascus.
Security sources said Israel would respond to Tuesday?s bombings by renewing its campaign of killing Hamas leaders in the Palestinian territories and abroad.
Israel launched a rare air raid against a suspected Palestinian training camp deep inside Syria last October. Hamas political leader Khaled Meshal is based in Damascus.
Solana said the more important message to Syria came from a United Nations Security Council resolution adopted on Thursday urging the withdrawal of foreign forces from Lebanon and warning against interference in that country's politics.
