Man Stopped With Rocket Launchers In Downtown Denver
Denver Channel ^ | September 2, 2004 | N/A

DENVER -- A man waiting for a Greyhound bus in downtown Denver caught the attention of police Thursday. That's because he was carrying two military rocket launchers.

Denver police carry away two empty rocket launchers confiscated in downtown Denver Thursday.

The man told police he had gotten the empty shoulder-fired rocket launchers from his brother, who had just returned from fighting in Iraq. The launchers apparently can be used only once and are then discarded.

The man was taking them to his son in Chicago, but police confiscated them, even though they are legal. Officers were worried the sight of the rocket launchers might cause panic among those who didn't know they were already used.

When they outlaw rocket launchers, only outlaws... Oh, never mind.

Ah, the headline writers!
I assume a man with two rocket launchers was stopped.
Any other scenario would be major overkill. Unless, of course, this was one huge, bad dude. I mean I suspect it would only take one rocket launcher to stop most of us mere mortals.

Sounds like they already did.

I have to wonder if this guy had no suitable containers
to carry these thing in, and essentially surrendered
them rather than get hassled at every stop between DEN
and CHI. I suspect he could get them back.

Do all cops know how to ID a harmless launcher?
Unless they are ex-mil or SWAT, maybe not.
They are going to err on the side of caution at this
moment in history.

This sounds like Michael Douglas' role in the movie, "Falling Down." Boy, is that one fun to watch, even if the ending is sadly predictable and anticlimactic.

If they were legal, the police had no right to confiscate them. See Article V, U.S. Constitution.

A better solution would have been to say: "Hey dumbass, why not put those used rocket launchers in a box or bag so people don't freak out and waste our time. Better yet, send them UPS."

Yes, let's confiscate this man's legally-owned property, since we don't want to spook the herd.

Pathetic.

He probably should have found a way to UPS those things, bringing them on a bus wasn't the smartest idea I've ever heard.

His brother could be in some serious trouble as well.

Stupid is as stupid does. This jerk ought to have known that carrying that type of weapon at a bloody bus station, of all places, would garner notice. Sheesh!

So the article title was incorrect? This would be like saying I was holding a bullet, when in reality, I was holding the casing from a spent bullet. Why is this so hard?

The bigger question is, will the police now deliver them to his house? ;)
