This idiot is totally dilusional. This isn't the first time I've heard nonsense about Lee Atwater apologizing. Later I heard it was impossible.
If this is an indication of Kerry's decisionmakers are thinking and feeling, he will probably hurt as much as help himself. One, Estrich's tone is extremely hysterical. Two, why would she telegraph the charges in advance? One suspects that this is simply psychological warfare, and not necessarily effective psychological warfare. Finally, there are only two charges mentioned that could possibly transform this campaign. The first, the possibility that Bush paid for or encouraged an abortion, can actually be turned around if it's true -- allowing Bush the rare opportunity to highlight his conversion to Christianity
AND the principled nature of his pro-life stance. The second, the claim that Cheney has, or recently had, a drinking problem, is simply not credible. He has had serious heart trouble for years. Presumably he is not allowed to drink heavily. Cheney is far too disciplined and responsible to violate doctors' orders of this type.
I hope that Estrich's column is publicized far and wide in all media. It makes the Democrats look terrible.
One final thought occurs to me: Throwing a whole set of charges, whether wholly false or partly true, at a candidate, let alone two candidates, is counterproductive because it's too hard for voters to sort out and because it looks like the desperate piling on that it is.
People will see right through it.

It has been interesting to watch wide mouth frog unravel. She has become increasingly more rabid as her favorite sinks into the mess he has created for himself.
