This tropical depression is expected to hit Venezuela or the Antilles in 5 days (Tuesday). Meanwhile, another hurricane will swirl off California. So we've got two storms for next week, even after we deal with Frances.

Is this season active or what?

By the way, what happens when Super Hurricane Delta slams Palm Beach on November 2? At this rate, it's a question worth asking. What if there's no electrical power in a county that uses electronic voting machines? How would such a disaster impact vote counting?

It will knock out power to miami-dade and all the new yoikas won't be able to vote, but the central and northern (southerners) I would think should be able to.

It started late, but its-a-hoppin' now! I think its been 3 or 4 years running that the long term forecasters have looked for an active season. Well, we finally got it. Ya think it could be global warming kicking in?

Not global warming. An evaluation of the hurricane data reveals a clear multidecadal oscillation in the number and intensity of tropical cyclones. They were very common in the ~1880s, 1930s-1960s, and 1990s. The year 1933, in fact, had 21 tropical cyclones. Even more obvious is a shift in the landfall patterns of tropical cyclones. During periods of relative inactivity, hurricanes occur only rarely along the Atlantic seaboard, whereas during active hurricane cycles, the Eastern seaboard frequently takes hits. We're in the ACTIVE, EASTERN part of the oscillation this decade. It began with Andrew (1992), Emily (1993), the 19 storms of 1995, and includes Floyd (1999), Isabel (2003), and others.

The fluke was the low number of big hurricane hits in the US for the last 40 years. Not what's happening now...shouldn't expect a year as damaging as this EVERY year, but people better get used to a fairly regular diet of at least Charley-like hits every couple years or so.

And this season has absolutely nothing to do with global warming, as noted by the previous poster.

< put art bell hat on>

Clearly this means that the 'Weather War' machines developed by the late Soviet Union have fallen into even more unfriendly hands who are now using them to launch weather salvos at the United States.

"William Gray, a Colorado State University meteorologist who has successfully predicted annual hurricane activity for more than 20 years, said that may mark the start of a prolonged cycle.

"If the recent nine-year shift follows prior occurrences, it is likely that enhanced intense Atlantic basin hurricane activity will persist through the early decades of the 21st century," he said.

I've read in a couple places now that the cycles may last 20 years.
