Our Political Bureau. New Delhi, Sept 1: India will be collaborating with Israel and the US to develop nano-materials and hi-tech components needed for electronic warfare systems.
The outgoing chief of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), VK Aatre said that India had decided to launch joint programmes with Israel in the field of electronic warfare, where both countries were on an equal footing.
Israel is very strong in sensors and packaging. We would like to work on fibre-optic gyros and micro-electromechanical systems, Dr Aatre told mediapersons shortly before retiring as DRDO chief on Tuesday.
Responding to questions on co-operation with the US in defence research, he said the two sides had done some work on life sciences and would launch joint programmes on developing nano-technology and nano-materials. India and the US currently have a joint technical group to oversee collaboration in defence research.
Outlining the achievements of DRDO during his tenure of five years, he said the organisation had achieved a fair amount of maturity in developing electronic warfare and radar systems.
It had also made significant strides in developing integrated circuits and components used in aircraft, missiles and electronic warfare systems.
In response to another question, Dr Aatre said that Sundays test of the Agni-II, which has a range of over 2,000 km, was meant to validate the Armys capability to launch the missile.
DRDO has trained Army personnel in maintaining and launching the missiles and the test was the first one that directly involved the Army in the launch of the Agni-II.
Interesting. Could you add more if you find anything relevant?
When I worked for DEC, we had a semiconductor plant in Israel before it was safe to do so.
EW is as important in many ways as any other weapon system. You can have great airplanes and shipes, but without EW they are targets.
Good to see the 3 countries tie together. Don't like India doing naval excercises with the ChiComs. In the end I suspect India is in our camp. But the mix of the US and Israel is great. They have fast turn around on technology due to small BS.
The Sino-Indian Naval exercises were mainly search & rescue based & had nothing connected to use of weaponry or tactics. As long as China supplies Pakistan with missiles, planes & just about everything,India will never trust China.Going by your logic shouldn't Israel be worried about the USN doing exercises with Egypt or Saudi Arabia.
I don't think this is a 3 way tie up in the pure sense,it is more like India-Israel(Which has been going real strong for 4-5years) & a US-India tie-up(which is still in its infancy).Israel is now India's largest arms supplier after Russia & joint projects include a short range sea-launched point defence missile, which will be an enhanced version of Israel's Barak missile, joint development & marketting of India's Dhruv helicopter & possibly research into submarine systems & artillery systems.India is doing on a much smaller scale what the US has been doing to Israel's arms industry for the past 30 years,by providing funds for research & test facilities.
