Arnold on America: Defending his country from detractors
Union Leader ^ | 9/02/04

Posted on 09/02/2004 12:41:23 AM PDT by kattracks

ARNOLD Schwarzenegger took the stage at the Republican convention Tuesday night to do three things: Praise President Bush, draw new voters into the Republican Party, and defend the United States of America against its critics. This last point is the most interesting because the critics he took on were not foreign heads of state or black-robed terrorists — they were leftists and Democratic Party leaders.

When Arnold said: “You know, I was born in Europe and I’ve traveled all over the world. And I can tell you that there is no place, no country, more compassionate, more generous, more accepting and more welcoming than the United States of America,” he was rebutting left-wing critiques that America is a greedy, imperialist nation.

When he said: “And one thing I learned about America is that if you work hard and if you play by the rules, this country is truly open to you. You can achieve anything,” he was rebutting demagogues like John Edwards, who claim that America is no longer the land of opportunity for everyone.

When he said: “Now, they say that India and China are overtaking us. Don’t you believe it. We may hit a few bumps, but America always moves ahead. That’s what Americans do,” he was rebutting John Kerry, who has tried to convince Americans that the nation is no longer able to compete in the global marketplace.

It says a lot when one party feels compelled to defend not its reputation, but the country’s reputation from attacks led by the other party.
