Lots of states have deadlines for submitting a party's candidate for the state's ballot.

What are the consequences of missing the deadline? Is the party "lost" as a matter of law? Or has it only lost the ability to have a candidate name on the ballot?

The DemocRATS already have named their candidate. My guess is that they would not be able to change the name on the ballot if state officials refuse to change it.
