He volunteered for the Swiftboats when he thought they would be restricted to shore patrol. It was AFTER he'd volunteered that the Navy decided to send them up the rivers! Maybe, but he didn't have to volunteer for VN "brown water" duty at all. If he'd wanted to ensure staying offshore, he could have stayed on his destroyer (like I did). He could have completed that cruise, then never had to worry about VN again probably.
OK, enough of this, because I don't want to be put in a position of defending Kerry, I'm just trying to keep the details straight...

The PBFs were the best substitute available.

Maybe Kerry was bored on the destroyer and saw the swift boat's shore patrol duty as a chance to get a good case of the clap. As soon as the boats went to river duty, Kerry started focusing on "three and out".
Looking at the character of the man, I'd say my version reflects a more likely chain of events.
