POLICE in New York have arrested more than 560 protesters after demonstrations outside the Republican convention turned wild.
Demonstrators and an entire midtown Manhattan block were wrapped in orange netting in a bid to control the anti-Republican activists who massed in the streets for marches to the site of the convention.
Outside the New York Public Library, in the streets near the famed Herald Square and at the site of the fallen World Trade Centre, demonstrators pointed themselves toward Madison Square Garden and promised to get their message across that they want President George W. Bush out of office.
By late evening that the planned march had deteriorated into blocks of human gridlock in several parts of the city.
Police said more than 560 people were arrested at various protests around the city - by far the largest number of single-day arrests since demonstrations began last week.
More than 1,000 people in all have been arrested since then.
Near Ground Zero, officers encircled scores of demonstrators with orange netting during a rally before the march.
Detained protesters were loaded onto an off-duty city bus, and police put the count at about 200. The demonstrators insisted they were following police orders.
An Associated Press photographer was detained briefly in the cordon before being released; a photo messenger working with the photographer was arrested and taken into custody.
Near Herald Square, a bus carrying convention delegates was blocked by protesters until police arrived. About 150 people were arrested, police said.
Police also announced the arrest of a 21-year-old Yale student after he entered a restricted area near Vice President Dick Cheney's booth at the convention on Monday night, coming within 10ft of him and shouting anti-war and anti-Bush statements. Cheney was never in any danger, and no weapon was found on the man, authorities said.
Outside the midtown hotel where Texas delegates are staying, about two dozen protesters, depicting employees of "Hallibacon," grunted through plastic pig snouts and wallowed in stacks of fake $100 bills bearing the images of Bush and Cheney.
The protesters accused Cheney and Halliburton, the company he once led, of profiting from the war in Iraq and its aftermath. They chanted: "We love money. We love war. We love Cheney even more."
Oh, those wacky liberals!
Just peaceful ole dims having a pacifist day. I didn't read about any of this happening during the dims convention. Is there a message here?
I just finished reading an article that reminded me of the actions of protesters in Boston. They put them in cages os speak.
They did not want it getting out of hand. But, frankly I thought we acted like adults during the dems convention.
Bush, went dark as a sign of respect and an honored tradition. Kerry breaks that tomorrow when he speaks in Ohio. Goodness some of his actions just tick me off.
Thanks for the post.
OK, mind answering a small question and I am sure I will know it and feel quite silly ...what is MSM?
At least there's a real number of arrests reported in the press.
I never heard of MSM either so maybe it needs to be spelled out the first time it's used in a thread.
Hugh Hewitt was talking about these demonstrators who are blocking streets and shouting curses and spitting on delegates. He called them "Michael Moore Democrats" and I think that's a good name for them. They take nastiness to a whole new level that's not explored by any other party.
MSM.. main stream media (aka liberal media)
It'll be interesting to see what happens tomorrow.
Has anyone done a headcount to see which of the third party supporters is missing from FR today?
Maybe for the sake of us who don't understand all the abbreviations, there should be a dictionary or glossary or something. I get lost sometimes too, but don't have the courage to ask. Thanks Chick.
You'll notice that in this 374-word article, there didn't seem to be much room for any details of the behavior that merited arrest.
There was room, however for descriptions of 'cute' costumes and chants that insulted the president.
Brit Hume noted that the F-bomb has been dropped liberally throughout the protest. What has been left out in the coverage?
Any flag-burnings? Any Worker's World Party signs? Any depictions of Bush as Hitler? Any Che Guevara posters? Any Palestinian flags? Did Lyndon Larouche's people show up complaining about Jewish neocons? Any hairy, unwashed, tie-dyed, pierced, tattooed, parent-subsidized, incoherant, hammer-and-sickle sporting cadres present? etc. etc.
Yet another sanitized report of a Leftist mob.
Fifth Edition of the Lexicon of FreeRepublic * * A helpful FR dictionary for newcomers * *
All too true. Meanwhile, the Protest Warriors (God bless 'em) get painted as "right wing radicals" for their comparatively mild actions.
Oh well...I think we all know what the Leftists look like and the monsters they support, but here's a picture for all of us to cherish anyway...
The reason this didn't happen during the Democrat convention was that all these protesters were inside.
Police Arrest Nearly 1,000 Protesters in New York
By SARA KUGLER, AP
NEW YORK (Sept. 1) -- Nearly 1,000 protesters were arrested across Manhattan on Tuesday as swarms of activists massed in the streets for marches to the site of the Republican convention - by far the biggest day of arrests since the demonstrations began last week.
There were no immediate reports of violence, but police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said officers showed ''great restraint in the face of relentless provocation'' by the protesters.
Police official Michael Collins said there were more than 970 arrests at various protests around the city. More than 1,300 people have been taken into custody in convention-related protest activity since late last week.
Heightened security against the protests has turned Manhattan into a crazy-quilt of barriers, heavily armed police and street-corner activists. One of those arrested late Tuesday at a demonstration was a 19-year-old man who was seen on a videotape assaulting a detective a day earlier, police said.
Outside the New York Public Library, in the streets near the famed Herald Square and at the site of the fallen World Trade Center, demonstrators pointed themselves toward Madison Square Garden and promised to get their message across that they want President Bush out of office.
''People are trying to question the policies of a corrupt government. They take to the streets and don't ask permission,'' said protester Gan Golan, 30, a graduate student from Boston who was arrested after he sat in the street and refused to get up.
On the library's stone steps, hundreds of protesters gathered for the march. Verbal confrontations erupted as police moved them away from the library's front door and wrapped the block in orange netting, and about 75 people were taken into custody before the crowd thinned out.
Near Ground Zero, officers also encircled scores of demonstrators with orange netting during a protest before the march. Detained protesters were loaded onto an off-duty city bus, and police put the count at about 200. The demonstrators insisted they were following police orders.
An Associated Press photographer was detained briefly in the cordon before being released; a photo messenger working with the photographer was arrested and released hours later.
Near Herald Square, a bus carrying Louisiana delegates was blocked by protesters until police arrived. About 150 people were arrested, police said.
Outside the Fox News Channel studios in midtown Manhattan, police in riot gear used barricades to contain around 1,000 demonstrators staging a ''shut-up-athon'' to denounce what they called the network's right-wing slant. One woman held up a sign that read: ''Republicans are really stupid. They watch Fox News and believe it.''
Police also announced the arrest of a 21-year-old Yale student after he entered a restricted area near Vice President Dick Cheney's booth at the convention Monday night, coming within 10 feet of him and shouting anti-war and anti-Bush statements. Cheney was never in any danger, and no weapon was found on the man, authorities said.

The protesters accused Cheney and Halliburton, the company he once led, of profiting from the war in Iraq and its aftermath. They chanted: ''We love money. We love war. We love Cheney even more.''

I think the police are going to need help. I believe they are processing these people in a warehouse down at the pier. I'm hoping General Karpinski might get a new commission to watch over these detainees. One hopes they are holding these people for 24-48 hours at least.
t thank you so much for the clarification
