Your posts are right on the money! My objective for my retirement years is to be as self-sufficient as possible. I want my house paid for, my savings in "hard" assets, and no debts. The whole streamlined for minimum tax exposure as I anticipate a world where the "ants" will be raided to pay for the "grasshoppers'" laziness and irresponsibility. (Come to think of it, that's the world we live in now.)

Best regards,

Bill

The old man grew indignent and exclaimed, "That's my social security. I earned it."

Every older person I've talked to in our respective families is *fiercely* protective of social security, even the Republicans. As the population ages, old people on Soc. Sec. will become an ever-increasing percentage of voters. The whole thing is going to have to collapse before anyone does anything about it.

And yes, *why is* President Bush pushing for SS for Mexicans???

Same here, but one reason is that they were led to believe that SS was all they needed for retirement income. So many don't have all that much in retirement savings, and are now dependent on the government checks (just like the Democrats wanted).

My retirement plan's in the back of my truck. I've got a metal detector to help me find the change others' grandkids lost so I can buy that morning cup of java. On my days off, I can smile at people at Walmart and offer them a smiley face sticker.

It should be divided among age groups the amount of lump sum payment a worker shall receive.

Good idea, but there is no "lump" to give them. Congress raided that cookie jar, and spent all the money. The only way to pay out a lump is to continue SS taxes to some degree, or to use other tax revenues.

There are only two solutions. Either (1) cut payments, or (2) increase retirement age substantially.

Do you mean increase retirement age for the Boomers? If you were born after 1969, you already have to wait until you're 70. (I don't have any problem with the Boomers waiting a few more years. If they expect their children to make the sacrifice, they should be willing to sacrifice as well.)

Once, I felt sorry for the "working" elderly. I thought of these little old, blue-haired ladies struggling through their arthritis to get through a day at a supermarket checkout.

Then it hit me; if they're really disabled, they can already get benefits. If they're strong and healthy and have no savings or retirement why should they expect *me* to support them? (Soft-headded, immature liberal grows up, starts thinking and stops feeling quite so much...)

And make no mistake, it will be a disaster, because inaction would lead to massive tax hikes on the next generation of workers.

No need for a tax hike. Just increase the money supply!

There is money - cut spending and enact a 10% across-the-board tariff on all imports that will pay for the lump-sum payouts. Then SS is totally dissolved.

LOL - and the government can give away free wheelbarrows in which to carry all the worthless cash.

Somehow I have a feeling of deja vu here... channelling my inner Weimar Republic spirits...

Don't you find it funny that, whenever you go to a finer restaurant, a disproportionate amount of customers are over 65. The elderly have more disposable income than most groups.

Preach it, brother. Socialized medicine for the elderly is the #1 reason. My husband and I are paying out the wa-wa for it, and neither we nor our children will ever see it. It's a system that's going to have to collapse entirely before it gets fixed.

And when they issue the new monthly denominations, remember to recycle your old currency in the right curbside can.
