Pictures of Bush/Kerry w/ Ribbons
Me

Posted on 08/30/2004 10:09:11 PM PDT by wfu_deacons

I saw a thread several days ago talking about GWB's ribbons and the documentation for them. It is a big topic of discussion on DU (the vitriolic rants on that board are unbelievable, many are in need of therapy). Could someone provide a link to the previous discussion and the picture in question? Also, does anyone have a good picture of Kerry and his ribbons? Thanks.

George Bush's picture looked to be the standard one issued upon completion of Basic, but actually taken in the early days of Basic.
Those pictures are usually done during the first few days of in processing, before the dress uniforms are officially issued and are offered in a package for the parents.
In other words, you line up, are given a uniform jacket to put on by the photographer with the badges and ribbons they assume you will most likely be entitled to wear upon completion of basic, your picture is taken and the jacket and shirts are given to the next in line.
It's a photographic assembly line for the new recruits.
George Bush's buzz cut in the picture looks like it is the " new recruit I have no choice," picture.
It's like the vaccination line, only less painful.
The Democrats, with their lack of military knowledge, assumed that GW put on his own medals and ribbons and posed for the picture.

The "DUH" crowd worried about ribbons that they would have happily throw away.

Enjoyable to see them mess their pants. I will look into taking out some stock in the manufacturer of "Depends".

The award was given to the unit - not to each individual in the unit but to the unit itself. People who later join that unit are, as a custom, permitted to wear the commendation. The goons on DU hate the military and are therefore for the most part completely unfamiliar with military culture. They are just trying to muddy the waters anyway they can to spare Kerry any further questioning of his "war hero" status. The intellectual dishonesty over there on DU is truly mindbending. Yes, we have some of that here but they know how to take it whole other level.

It's not a picture after he enlisted. I believe this picture is his official officer photograph after he got his wings. Thanks

Navy personnel do not wear unit citations unless they were in the unit when the award was given. I don't know what the AF or ANG reulations are. I am a Naval Academy graduate, served 5 years on active duty, and retired from the reserves as a Commander. I can see some media organizations printing this without actually finding out the truth. After the Swift Boat claims, I was amazed at the inaccuracies that made it into print. The main stream media is both incompetent and lazy.

The Bush photo is one there but not a Kerry photo.

AFOUA ribbons are allowed if one is a current member of the organization even if that member was not part of the organization when it was presented. The DD214 will list the AFOUA and Oak leaf clusters deserved to the individual upon separation from the military. I once was in an organization that had three awards, therefore I had to put two oak leaf clusters on the AFOUA but when I left I had to take the clusters off because I was a member when only one AFOUA was given. A BMTS may have an AFOUA and thereby the recruits attached to it are authorized to wear the citation as long as they are members of the organization. Guard members may have state ribbons that are not SOP for the regulars and are sometimes hard to identify. I have a Tennessee Volunteer ANG ribbon/medal that is not listed anywhere in the active duty medal/ribbon inventory.

In any case, I can't see someone faking a unit award to add color to their chest. Who cares about a unit award? I think it is the personal awards that matter. Moreover, if you were illegitimately wearing a unit commendation then everyone in your unit would certainly know it and soundly rap you over the skull - it is a really stupid thing to do with essentially no benefit even if you are able to get away with it. This is just inane attempt at distracting people from the questions surrounding Kerry's "war hero" status upon which he has based his entire presidential campaign.
