Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

Thanks for the posting. I did not know anything about Hampton's support for the GOP.

I am friend's with a certain former Columbia records jazz producer and musician who recently confessed that he was a Reagan Republican. (We had never talked politics in our previous years of friendship.) My reponse was: Yeah, you and Lionel Hampton.

yeah, the quartet stuff with Benny is amazing.
I think Goodman was a bleeding heart, but I'm not sure.

I only had a brief encounter with him. He took a short nap between sets. He dedicated his attention when he talked with someone, the manager of the club didn't like it because he wanted Hamp onstage when he was busy talking backstage.
My brother had already met him earlier at another show a couple of years earlier.
I later saw him on Arsenio Hall's show but his musical performance was only used at the bumpers so he wasn't heard by the home audience. I was not at the taping, I only saw what was broadcast. There was a brief interview where Arsenio tried to get Lionel to say something negative or demeaning about George Bush (who was the President at the time), something like when he asked if he ever told the young Bush41, "Hey, boy, get me a soda!"
I've also read an interview with one of the other medal winners who at the same Kennedy Awards(?) that Lionel Hampton was at when he was presented with some award by Bill Clinton. The musician said that he was more impressed/honored to be meeting Lionel Hampton than Bill Clinton (I don't think that the interviewer was amused).
