If you see folks on the streets of New York in dolphin suits, and wonder why they're wearing heavy, airless, synthetic-fiber getups in the killing summer sun, here's the answer:
The Republican National Committee has deployed staffers and volunteers to impersonate Flipper, the beloved dolphin who starred in the 1960s television series. It's to lampoon Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry and his alleged flip-flops on the issues.
RNC communications chief Jim Dyke yesterday told me that his office has bought 10 of the bulky, heat-stroke-inducing costumes, at $500 per, so a whole school of Flippers can attend Democratic Party events during the Republican Convention - including the Dems' daily news conference criticizing the opposition.
"We call them 'Flipper and friends,'" Dyke said. "We're trying to get them to DNC events and help DNC surrogates [advocates for Sen. John Kerry] get around the city. We want the Democrats to feel comfortable in New York - make them feel as if their flip-flopping candidate were present."
But "comfortable" is hardly the word.
RNC research director Tim Griffin said: "I think the temperature could get up to 110 degrees inside the costume, but I think some of them have little electric fans."
That should save the RNC's Flippers from keeling over on the sidewalk.
I love Pres. Bush but do you have any idea how HOT it is in NYC this week...the humidity is so bad that it feels like 100 degrees.
I am with you! I feel sorry for anyone wearing one in this hot muggy weather.
I would volunteer to show up at a DNC event.....to see the looks on the LIBS and medias faces would be worth the heat stroke..
You are nuts....its so hot in NYC today that the only people not running their AC's just dont have one ...its nasty : )))
I would consider this in OCT.Nov. though : )
"I feel sorry for anyone wearing one in this hot muggy weather."
Maybe large plexiglass water tanks (say,1000 gal size) are to be provided for Flippers? The logistics does not seem to be overwhelming.
Funny how it waited till the last week of August to get hot this year!
Its not the heat its the humidity...and it waited...we call this INDIAN summer....( does that make me a racist)???? LOL
Usually its like this in early mid July in NY burbs but not this year....
Indian summer doesnt come around until after the first frost and then a warm up.
That is how it was here in Ohio Friday, Sat, and much of yesterday. Hopefully the front that moved through here hits you all and things cool off. It was about 73 outside here with moderate humidity last I checked!
ping or is it Whap/Whap for a Flipper clap?
Love this story.See also the THIS thread - with our LEFT COAST Flipper:We need more Flippers!

Flipper/"Arnold"/GRINCH FReep John Kerry at SANTA MONICA fundraiser with Tony Bennett
Tony Bennett, Hollywood stars at "secret" fundraiser for John Kerry in SANTA MONICA: Thursday (8/26) ^ | August 29, 2004 | RonDog [and FRiends]

Poor John Kerry.Ever since the Swift Boat Veterans started talking about the "Girlie-Manchurian" Candidate's REAL record in Vietnam, it appears that the Botox Boy cannot even sneak into a formerly "safe" hard left enclave like Santa Monica without having to face crowds of protesters who insist on sharing their opinion that he is "Unfit for Command."
On Thursday, August 26, when Senator Kerry's entourage arrived at the swanky Fairmont Miramar Hotel in this rent-controlled beach community just outside Los Angeles for a "secret" $5,000/plate fundraiser with Tony Bennett and his "Limousine Liberal" buddies from "La La Land," they were greeted by members of the Hollywood Resistance Force (a.k.a. the L.A. Chapter of the Free Republic Network) - and a few of our FRiends...

Oh my God, we're going to laugh the 'Rats to death.
BTTT
Judy Grant, a staunch Democrat, had words with a couple of Republicans
displaying their view of John Kerry near the DFL booth at the fair.
They were handing out cards on sticks criticizing Kerry.
