That's right. They should appreciate us. The Soviet Union was intent on absorbing their neighbors, and they had zero tolerance for Islamic extremism. Afghanistan, home of Al Qaida, would still be Soviet territory were it not for our military aid to the mujahedeen.
If it wasn't for the U.S., Afghanistan and many of the people who make up Al Qaida would be licking Soviet boot.

THEY SHOULD APPRECIATE US Thanks for the clarification -- the title of this post had me scratching my head there for a moment. It sounded like the implication was that Al Queda and the Soviet Union would have been in cahoots had it not been for us -- and knowing how both those groups hate each other guts (score one point for the commies) this just did not compute.
