McCain would like to be the nominee in 2008. Personally I don't think he will be alive in 2008. So let's give him his due for stepping up to the plate for the party at this time, whatever his motive.
If I thought McCain was sincere, I would give him his due. He's only got one person in mind: McCain (for 2008)
