Large Fish Catches Boy in Minnesota
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) - An 11-year-old boy was out hunting frogs on Island Lake when he became the prey. A large fish, probably a muskellunge or a northern pike, attacked the boy about 5 p.m. Thursday as he and his young sister were wading in a foot of water.
The resulting wounds on Mason DeRosier's feet and hands required 11 stitches to close.
Mason's father, Richard DeRosier, was in a paddle boat just offshore during the attack. DeRosier, a Lake County deputy sheriff, said he was facing the children when he saw a huge swirl in the water.
``Before I can say 'Holy moley! Look at that!', all of a sudden the swirl is by their feet,'' he said.
Mason said he saw the fish splash just offshore. ``It was like, maybe, 5 feet in front of us,'' Mason said. ``Then it splashed right at my foot and bit me. It hurt.''
It didn't let go. ``I smacked it in the head and tried to pry it off my foot,'' Mason said. ``He let go, but he bit my hand...''

Bump to Minnesooota. I'll be there next month on business.
How many "o"'s are in Minnesooota anyhow?
"I rest my case :) Thanks for the proof!"
Not a problem. Since I moved to MN this summer, I've been out muskie fishing a few times with my new next-door neighbor. No luck so far.
Next time I go, though, I think I'll troll using a small boy with some hooks attached to his shoes. That might get some action.
You ought to see some of the lures these muskie guys use. Sheesh! They're bigger than most of the fish I've caught in the past. Amazing!
They're very easy to catch if you're fishing for something else!
That made me snort. I don't live very far from Island Lake so I'm familiar with the area mentioned in the story.
Yes, muskie bait can be most impressive. So can the fish!
I live on a lake in Minnesota.
I'll never go skiny dipping again. Don't want to dangle any bait in front of the fish.
The State Fair of state fairs going on right now. (Don't miss The Sausage Sisters.) Giant fighting muskies just a fishing license away. I wish I was there. (Yah, you betcha.)
Me and lots of Law Enforcement types will be real impressed when some yahoo gets caught trolling with a kid up north. 'Specially if he has a couple of toddlers in the bait bucket.
FISH BITES BOY!... Now thats news...
On the 5th cast one of the monster hit. Did I mention that I was in a smallish rubber boat? It was scary, the bugger was fighting like a muther and my boat was shifting like mad as the muskie darted this way and that. I had caught muskies in the past and knew they have VERY sharp teeth. The idea of being an unknown distance from my destination in a strange place and having my "boat" leaking air was not comforting, so I decided I had to get to the shore and deal with the fish there. It was a struggle, reel in as much as possible, then rowing like mad as the line went out, then the process repeated - All the while I'm floating down the river. IT made for a VERY exciting fight. I eventually made it to shore after what seemed to be an eternity. Apparently I was not the only one who was exhausted as the muskie was very easy to pull on shore after I got there.
The generic stringer didn't fit the big guys mouth, good thing I had some wire in the tacklebox. I strung him up and made camp in about an hour. I was the hero of the camp site that night as everyone came by to take a look at the big fish that little kid caught.
Don't name your kid Mason. sheeeeesh!
See what happens when you stop eating Lutefisk.
Inside joke for Scandi's.
Is that a Muskie or just a closeup oh Helen Thomas?
What a great story. (And it sounds like your grandparents were pretty great, too....)
As I recall, it is not uncommon to shoot or club muskies prior to hauling them into the boat.
Great story.
A few years ago, I was reading an article in a magazine (Outdoor Life?) about muskies and it mentioned a fatality from an attack. Apparently a man had leaned over the side of his boat to pull in a fish when the muskie jumped out of the water and took a huge chunk out of his throat. Does anyone else remember reading about this?
