I don't think that you DO understand. The decision was not to GET sympathy. It would have been easy to go to a red state, or even red city, like San Diego, for the convention.
NYC was chosen in a spirit of Uniting, not Dividing, giving sympathy, if you will.
The same Administration that offered $20 billion to New York instantly, even before Hillary and Chuckie asked for money, thought that bringing all the money and focus of a convention to the city would be a gesture of 'solidarity' for Americans.
It is a mark of the media power of the northeast elites that this has been spun into a "Bush has a nerve entering our city" story.
How quickly people forget that the DNC wanted to go to NYC, too.
