Actor Patrick Stewart Has Heart Procedure

LOS ANGELES (AP) - "X-Men" star Patrick Stewart is recovering at home after undergoing an angioplasty procedure earlier this week to widen an artery, his publicist said Friday.

Angioplasty involves the use of catheters to place a small balloon in a narrowed blood channel. When the balloon is inflated, the artery flows more freely.

The 64-year-old Stewart - who played Professor Xavier in "X-Men" and its sequel, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" - went in for an annual physical on Monday, according to his publicist, Kelly Bush.

Doctors detected a blood-flow problem and recommended "pre-emptive angioplasty" to head off any future ailments.

Bush described the procedure as a success and said he is resting before returning to work next week, where he plans to finish the upcoming movie "The Game of Their Lives." He will also start voice over work on the Fox TV animated series "American Dad."

However, Stewart's recovery will force him to miss a planned personal appearance on Saturday in Toronto, where he was set to visit a Canadian sci-fi festival.

I have no idea whether there's an established Star Trek PING list or not, in all honesty.

If there IS, however: some kind fellow FReeper may wish to alert same, re: this story.

Interesting...

On TV he had a mechanical heart while in real life he has a bleeding heart. Now we find out he has a clotted heart.

Being an actor and all that he probably pays little attention to politics, and is probably therefor a liberal.

In any event I think its great he had a successful operation and will be back to work soon.

I remember hearing about the "new Star Trek" way back when, and then seeing a cast photo on the local television guide in the Sunday Paper... my first reaction... "The Captain is bald???".

It was a good show though.

while in real life he has a bleeding heart.

Gotta love the irony, then:

went in for an annual physical on Monday, according to his publicist, Kelly Bush.

:)

There was a better bald ST captain. . . .

Anyway, glad he's doing well, enjoyed the show, but you're right about him being a flaming liberal. What's more, he's a Bush-hating flaming liberal. I heard him on the radio denouncing all that Mars stuff we were hearing about earlier in the year, because Bush was talking about it. Gore or Kerry could say the same thing, and he'd be all for it. But, not him. "We need to spend that money to fix the messes people like Bush have made on Earth." I've seen his name on a list of famous socialists.

Given his loathing for America, I'm surprised he had it done here. Why didn't he go to Europe?

I think I'll not even go there. ;)

But, this fella was ballsy enough to falsify information in order to draw an ally into a war. That's gotta go for something:

Given his loathing for America

That doesn't jibe with his stated opinions, insofar as I can Google.

"The word 'anglophile' has existed for generations to describe people entranced with all things British. As yet, however, there is no word to describe Brits who are besotted with American culture. "Isn't that strange?' says Patrick Stewart. 'And yet it's very real.' It includes the likes of John Cleese and Malcolm McDowell. "And Tony Hopkins,' the 56-year-old Stewart adds. "I spoke to him the other day and we were in such agreement. 'He said, "I love America. I love the people. Why would I ever go back?" ' "

He doesn't like Bush -- and, I agree, that's unfortunate -- but: I wouldn't automatically conflate that into "... and, therefore, he hates AMERICA, as well!" :)

Avery Brooks was absolutely Da Man, on Deep Space Nine...

... but: everytime I see him, I keep hearing him drawl, in my mind: "SPENsaaaahhhhh..." :)

did that character really have a mechanical heart? that's interesting.

Medical science is amazing. Look at all the things that can be done for folks nowadays. I guess I'm old enough to still be amazed with this. My grandchildren (when I get them, as I hope I do) will probably think nothing of it.

Ever in command, Stewart even gave the doctors instructions on the procedure to close, and even what size silk to use to suture the opening.

Rousing himself from the anesthesia, he was heard to say "Make it sew, number 1"

He should remember that without his artificial heart, he'd be a junior officer delivering reports to Geordie LaForge.

A few years back he made a number of very negative comments about America. Don't remember the details - I haven't watched Star Trek since the orignal series - but remember being surprised at how negative he was towards a country that has given him a lot.

Sorry I can't provide details...

Yeah. He got stabbed through the heart when he was a cadet and got an implant.
