How would that even be possible?
This isn't New Jersey here.
The Democrats have chosen their standard bearer, and I don't believe there is a mechanism for them to replace their nominee lest some tragedy befalls him, and I don't mean poor poll numbers.
I have been saying for some time now, while others all around have been in a panic, that Kerry will be DOA by the end of September. Should this be the case as it will be, what if anything could the Democrats other than go down with Kerry's sinking swift boat?
Could Kerry withdraw his name from the race, and if so, then what?
But the question is of course could a man as self-serving and self-important as Kerry ever "take one for the team"?
I would imagine that if Kerry could somehow be replaced at the top of the ticket, it would be with John Edwards, not Hillary HamRod. Why would she want to blow her aspirational load prematurely?

Eagleton.
And even if there was no mechanism: Toricelli/Lautenberg
But there has to be a mech, because people are mortal,
and eventually a candidate will get struck by lightning
after getting the nom.
If Kerry steps down, taking a medical deferment, caused
by a recurrence of his "cured" prostate cancer, is a
likely excuse.
But since there's a credible argument that the Clintons
(who tightly control the DNC) want him to lose, there
may be no high-level pressure for him to step aside.
And if it's left up to Kerry to conclude that he needs
to step aside, my read of his "character" says he won't.
I agree that if this happens, his replacement will be the Breck Girl scheister and not the Butch of NY.
Don't forget the Lousenberg defense.
