Activist says North seized defector on honeymoon

A North Korean defector on her honeymoon in China has been kidnapped and returned to her former homeland, a human rights activist group in Seoul has claimed.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry said yesterday it has asked Chinese authorities to investigate the report. Jin Gyeong-suk, 24-year-old woman, and her husband were attacked on Aug. 8 near China's border with North Korea by a group of men speaking Northern dialects, said Doh Hee-yoon, secretary-general of the civic group, Coalition for Human Rights of Abductees and North Korean Refugees.

According to Mr. Doh, the couple went to the border during their honeymoon because an ethnic Korean broker said he could arrange a meeting between Ms. Jin and her cousin from the North. The cousin reportedly lived in Cheongjin, North Hamgyeong province. The couple had approached the border along the Tumen River in China's Jilin province when they were accosted.

Mr. Doh said the husband, who was not identified, reported he managed to escape and that his wife was forcibly taken to the North.

The couple arrived in South Korea in October 2002, and the wife gave birth to a son while undergoing a two-month settlement preparatory course in the South. The couple had their wedding ceremony in September last year, and went on the belated honeymoon in July, Mr. Doh said.

Seoul's Foreign Ministry said yesterday that it learned about the apparent seizure immediately after it took place because the couple's relatives filed reports. The ministry said it asked Beijing to look into the incident, but has so far received no information about it.

The incident took place only days before the National Intelligence Service warned South Koreans abroad of possible retaliation from North Korea following the arrival in the South of 460 North Korean refugees.

If I were in her place, and just escaped from N. Korea, I wouldn't have been staying anywhere near the border.

Let's see ... I defect from N. Korea in October 2002 ... In August 2004 (a short two years later) I go on vacation to jolly old China (right next to the N. Korea border) with my husband ... I get captured and returned to N. Korea and my beloved escapes.

Yep! Sounds like she makes great choices in life.
